Some people will be happy with the signing others wont but just trust Smith and the process he obviously wants him for a reason,when/if he signs get behind him and trust Smith.

Fair enough.

We had the youngest squad in the league last year and have already released the three oldest/most experienced players in the last few weeks.

Getting someone into the dressing room with Young’s knowledge and experience can only be a benefit, I bet Cash, Targett, El Ghazi etc are all looking forward to working with him and Grealish must have idolised him as a kid.

I know everyone got very upset with him winning a penalty against us but as far as I remember he’s always held a real affinity for Villa since he left. Remember him being present at Villa Park a few times to watch us.

I’m all for this. If it’s a one year deal on a free transfer it makes sense. Much needed experience in the squad and judging on his last season at Inter, he can still play a bit too. I hope that he’s still motivated to do well and whatever part he plays for us, he does it to the best of his ability.

Excellent signing. He will have limited game time (none of it as a winger I suspect) but all of his contribution will come off the pitch.

Hopefully he wants and is adept at a coaching role and can maybe take Terry’s spot when he ultimately leaves.

Barry did a double page interview in the papers demanding he wanted to leave for Liverpool, when we turned down a bid.

When did Young do anything like that?

I’ve never understood the continued love of Gareth Barry by some fans. He was a decent player but for me he never showed up in the big games when the chips were down. As you rightly say he kicked up a big fuss when he wanted to leave.

I understand that there are reasons why players move on but there’s a way of doing it. Delph, Yorke, Barry are examples of how not to do it. James Milner and to the best of my memory Ashley Young did it right. Still disappointing though at the time.

Slightly off topic but I still think that's my favourite villa top ever...if only for the sponsor and what it meant!

Happy about the signing too....provides good cover minimum fuss.

I'm actually baffled that people don't understand this transfer. 90% of our signings are going to be under 25s with resale value but it doesn't mean we shut the door to opportunities like this.

We get experience, squad depth, cover at multiple positions and an improvement on what we had before, all for no fee and just wages. He will get a decent chunk of games with the injuries/suspensions we are likely to pick up. We don't have European football, we aren't in a position to go spend 10-12m on specialist RB and LB as a backup to our current starters, this a great short term solution for 1-2 years. He's clearly in decent condition having just played 30 odd games for the Italian title winners.

I think the short term solution is the thing

We obviously don't see anyone else we like, don't see the point in spending double digit millions in that position or think we have an academy product who isn't ready yet, might mean Kesler can go on loan

He's a gap filler

Whoever said about doing the badges that's interesting

Just hope he isn't Pires.. Still waiting to see what good he brought to barry bannan

And he is better than Taylor and elmo so it's still an upgrade
