The rigors of being a rotation/back up player in the PL. 100% certain he could handle that.

And then if by next season we need a upgrade on Targett to kick on we are in a much better position to attract one.

This signing would give us time, save us money and still improve us short term. Could not care less that he dived for a penalty a bunch of seasons ago.

What tactical approach would that be?

Basically the 4-2-3-1, played just like we used it last season, only with slightly more creativity. This won't take us forward unless we sign at least one top class specialist 6 and a quality shadow striker.

Sorry but this move really disappoints me. I don’t rate Targett as anything more than a reliable 6-7 out of ten player. I was hoping for real competition here. For me this is a position where we need a viable quality alternative, with pace and energy.

It all hints to the tactical approach we are likely to take, which doesn't excite me.

6-7 out of ten player?!?!

Did you watch last season? Were his teammates playing a different game when they voted for him as player of the season. This was with Neil Taylor as competition as well.

not only are you insulting targett with this statement, you are also insulting all the players that voted him as he won the players player of the year award

But this signing is a back up. We could still go and buy other players for those positions.
I think you’re jumping to a lot of conclusions based on a potential “free” signing.
For me, he’s a good backup, which means we don’t need to waste £10-15m on a back up, funds that can then go towards other signings.

Aaaannd you've lost me. Targett was our best player last season.

No he wasn't. Jack was! Our most improved player yes, most reliable defender yes. Watkins was better than him, Konsa was on par with him.

Targett went from needing to be replaced to undropable. That is certainly fine work. But he is still limited.

If this is what he is still capable of then yes please, can still whip a ball in better than Cash, Target n Guilbert.

He can be our Cambiasso lol

Was that meant to impress? 🤣 Probably the worst player vid I’ve ever seen!

Other than his goal he looked totally ineffective there!

The signing is less to do with what position he will play and more to do with his experience, I don't think we're signing him as our prime solution to lack of options at full back, and we're not desperate for another winger either. I think it's probably a sign that we're going to use the youngsters more, as otherwise I'm not sure we'd allow a 36 year old to take up a squad place, but because our academy is so good at the moment we're in a position where we can afford to do that.

That's my view. It's not insulting. He is a solid, reliable performer that has his limitations. One good season as a defensive fullback, doesn't make him a top fullback.

so konsa is also no more than a "reliable 6 or 7 out of 10 player"????!!!

If we still sign a pacy left back then I'm cool with that.

fine, but surely you must agree that we had to buy a backup LB this summer, but that we needed to use our FFP headroom on more pressing positions such as a CM and another forward player/striker? would you really have preferred us to drop 20/25m on a new LB?

Yup, the latest in a growing line of strangely familiar posts from 'different posters', which appear strident without reason.

I think we still might a full back that can cover both right back and left back, but not someone to take Targett's place in the first team, he was one of our best players last season. This thing of only signing players for the first team might sound good to say, but isn't the way any team operates even the very best ones sign players to improve their squad as well as the first team.

This. It's not entirely about what he's physically capable of on the pitch. The big value here is the advice he can pass on to, not only our young wingers, but also our young full backs. For a year, it's solid strategy. Experience counts for a lot, especially when we had one of the youngest squads in the Prem last season.
