Rob182
Do we have anyone who watches a lot of European/World Football that could suggest up-and-coming players in the ‘next big thing’ (but not the ridiculously highly rated) mould? Of the names linked so far (excluding the promising youngsters like Aribo/Justin) Maupay is the only one I like, and that’s only because of his return of 25 goals this season. I understand why people like Lolley, Bowen, Phillips and the like, but I just think that our recruitment team will look further than the league we’ve just left I’ve just done a quick search of some of the top scorers in foreign leagues, to provide an alternative angle (baring in mind that I’ve never watched these players) on our striker possibilities. Nicholas Pepe - Lille - 24yrs old - 22 goals Luka Jovic - Frankfurt - 21yrs old - 17 goals Andrea Belotti - Torino - 25yrs old - 23 goals Andrea Petagna - SPAL - 23yrs old - 16 goals Borja Iglesias - Espanyol - 26yrs old - 17 goals Adrian Dalmau - Heracles - 25yrs old - 19 goals Sam Lammers - Heerenveen - 22yrs old - 16 goals
WakefieldVillan
I'd like to see something like this by the end of the window; First choice XI Second String Steer Kalinic Guilbert Elmohamady New LB Hause Tuanzebe Chester Mings Schindler Bowen Murphy Phillips Whelan McGinn Lansbury Grealish Hourihane Abraham Maupay Lolley El Ghazi Other squad players or loans out; Sarkic, Bree, Davis, O Hare, Kodjia, Green, Hepburn-Murphy Other potential signings (or loan); Allioski? Justin? Marriott? Mount? Tomori? Carroll? Sell/Release; Nyland, Bunn, Hutton, De Laet, Taylor, Richards, McCormack, Elphick, Bjarnsson, Jedinak, Gardner, Adomah, Hogan. I think key is keeping a good nucleus of last season's squad, adding quality first team additions, especially in wide areas, adding more youth, retaining a bit of experience & signing good characters with ambition and that are on the way up not down or here for one last pay day. You can tell by my suggestions we've been playing in the championship a few seasons, obviously these are just suggestions which I think would make us much stronger but hoping that the scouts can pick some cheap quality foreign players up and also some decent lower league players too, whatever happens it should be an exciting summer!

The way he celebrated when he scored against us and what he said after the game (that I can't remember exactly) I think that feelgood-wise he would be the exact opposite of signing Lolley Good player though! Yeah there's no way I'd want him to sign him like, I was just originally responded to the question of players that have stepped up from the championship to the Premiership. I think most of us would agree but this is where it becomes about being realistic. Big holes at LB, CB, DM, RW and ST for me in the first team. And thats assuming Mings and El Ghazi are in the bag. We've won the Lottery in terms of the play-offs, keeping Jack and all that but there's still a lot of debt to cover I'd have thought and the transfer funds aren't going to be bottomless. £20m odd for those 2 for starters and 5 more first-team players needed imo. mottaloo
How would VTers think about foreign, promising players seeing Villa as a foot in the door/stepping stone, hoping to catch the eyes of the "bigger boys" ? Personally, I think it's an inevitable state of the modern game and although I know we ARE a big club, we need to re establish ourselves in the top flight first before we give it the bertie big b*ll*cks about attracting established big names. If they are good professionals and they give everything they've got for us, the motivation behind it is irrelevant essentially as long as it doesn't hurt the team spirit. I don't think you could build a good squad on that basis alone but one or two IF they are good professionals is ok I spose.

Austin when he moved to Southampton was the last one I can think of at the top of my head? We had Gestede and it didn't really work out. Hugill hasn't done much at West Ham. I'm sure there have been many more transfers since Chris Wood's goals to games/mins is pretty solid.

Sorry, but by this logic, 99% of players who play professionally use their clubs as stepping stones because they didn't grow up supporting the club they play for. Anyone who gets upset about players using us as a stepping stone is out of touch with reality. Every single player we signed last season, either permanently or on loan, came here to play and prove themselves. They didn't sign because they loved the Villa, they signed because we were the best opportunity on the table for them. Now, if we manage to sign our loanees from last year on permanent deals, the team spirit, culture, and work environment at BMH may play a much bigger factor in their decision than it did last year, but ultimately, most footballers wants to play at the highest level they can and make as much money as possible while doing it. Give me a player wanting to use us as a stepping stone vs someone like Gabby who got a free ride with us for 6-8 seasons, just because he had the "Mr. Aston Villa" label branded on him by everyone.

Your signings and list of potential signings are a bit championship heavy for me. Ipswich tried to be clever and signed young league one talent. Ipswich are in league one now. Not opposed to signing championship players but the mix has to be right.

I've obviously watched a lot of Championship football the past few seasons hence some of the names suggested. Out of the 6 names in the starting line ups, 2 were playing premier league football last season and the other 4 will be in the future in my opinion. Now whether that is with us or at other clubs who knows but for me they all have the right ingredients to play at that level for sure. I don't see the comparison with Ipswich, maybe when we were under Lambert and we tried the 'young & hungry' approach we may have been, but we were essentially buying cheap. Ipswich have been struggling for the past few seasons and probably needed the relegation as we did. Whom would be your suggestions?
