I missed most of the match, just caught up on a few posts in the match thread and the final 20 minutes on the radio. 

However this is a dreadful result any which way you look at it. 

At best you would hope we had been all over them and they grabbed a couple against the run of play though that's not how I believe it went down.  On the radio we weren't even having a go, just nothing going on. 

I know it was a banana skin and odd things happen on the first day of the season but this is very concerning.

Would be embarrassing were it not so unsurprising. We desperately need a more physically dominant striker and also a midfielder that is not a John McGinn just trying to float the ball to back post 20 times a game.

Midfield selection was wrong from the start, against a back 3 + low block you have incisive passers to keep the ball moving and players who can navigate tight spaces, not runners who won't have the room to run in the first place. Passing it back to the CBs a few times then out wide to be crossed to players half the size of their defenders is a team with no ideas. Not playing Mings against these was an insane decision, too.

He wasn’t picking superstars and was weeding them out of the club for the benefit of the team.

Anyone who has watched any part of Gerrards reign last year plus pre season would have seen today coming from a mile off. Gutless outfit on and off the pitch. He has time and should be given time but I really hope the owners give top lad Stevie G an absolute bollocking.

I came into this one optimistically - we have some really good players, we've added some quality and we can legitimately be hoping to push for that 7th spot. It's a really good squad with talent and depth.

This performance was just awful - it's knocked seven shades of sh*t out of all of those ideas.

I didn't like our opening shape - neither Ramsey or McGinn is really right in a 4-1-2-3, they don't defend enough and playing Coutinho in front of them gives a midfield with a number six and three players who are by nature number tens. I wasn't too impressed by our centre back pairing - a player who has never played Premier league football and a player who is awful in the air against a side with some really big threats from set pieces didn't seem the most sensible.

Still, against what might be the worst side in the Premier league for a number of seasons, I figured "Why not?" let's really go at them and score some goals.

As things transpired that didn't happen:

We had no pattern to our play at all.

We had no pace or drive to our play at all.

So that's the wrong selection, a lack of any sort of evidence of tactical nous and a complete lack of motivation.

All of that is on the manager - all of it - every single bit.

Individually we weren't great, but it was difficult because our shape and pattern (such as they exist) make it really difficult for our best players to be in the right positions at the right times to do the things they are good at.

I'm not going to pick on players - this one is on the manager - we've got the best owners in football and right now, by the look of how that team played, we're wasting them.

Watford last season were much better than this Bournemouth side and this Villa squad is much better than the one we had then - this is a much worse result and performance than that was.

The result is shameful.

The performance is incredibly worrying, it's as bad as anything I remember, as bad as the Villa side that got relegated - and this team is a hundred times more capable than that one.

Lose to Everton and the knives come out.

I can't see us beating Palace on todays' showing and if we get to the 28th August without a point, Villa Park will be a horrible place to be.

The manager needs to give the players a bollocking, then someone at the club needs to have the manager at their desk on Monday morning so that he gets some sense of just how much better he needs to be and how little time he has to do that.

We've gone backwards since last season - two wins in twelve games and those two against Norwich and Burnley.

The clock on this manager has started ticking and he needs to sort himself out sharpish.

This was a bad, bad day.

Kamara was good. Great at winning the ball back. Infuriatingly, he did it really high up with a chance to create a shot, but there was noone offering the opportunity so we failed to catch Bournemouth in transition.

It felt like ll three strikers touched the ball less than 10 times altogether so the issue is getting them in the game against teams sitting back. Coutinho and Buendia were meant to be the answers to this. Phil was useless today, Buendia buzzed around more but still didn't provide enough guile. 

The tactic of going long and throwing in crosses should've been abandoned after five minutes.

As soon as you see Moore in the Bournemouth squad, Mings should be playing. I don't think the ball drops in our area for their two goals if he is.

Really should be a No one option for MOTM. That was **** awful and I'm starting to board the Gerrard out train

Mc Ginn was invisible and had no impact on that one, Coutinho looked years past his best and a complete waste of a shirt. Defence did okay but had little help from midfielders who never did their jobs defensively. Ings was a fly on a windscreen, Watkins wasn't even a fly.

If Gerrard never realised before, he must now know that Villa need a strong, powerful, experienced frontman because Bournemouth's D had it way too easy out there !
