Ings movement is good and I'd certainly agree he has a far more ruthless streak in finishing than Ollie has at this moment.

However while Southampton don't have a Grealish getting in Walcott was actually an inspired move as him and Che Adams either side can create a fair bit more space for the central striker to move into.

It's something we still need to figure out a bit in the final third.

More concerned he's going to be completely done in by April with all the minutes he's played so far so think fatigue rather than ability is the biggest problem second half of the season.

He does too much running v reward....he will be knackered with the work he puts in......he has to work smarter, less running v more reward.....its doable.

Absolutely. I have thought that for a good few weeks now actually and did so early in the season too but then the Liverpool hattrick made me change my view for a while. He seems to be missing Ross Barkley actually too and i think on tonights perfomance Elghazi needs a rest again if RB is fit. Having said that i hope we rest a few against Liverpool.

Yes that’s how I tried to explain it with aggression but your wording is more nuanced than that.

Shearer taught the ball a lesson when he headed. And whilst being strong can work against you fouls wise (Lukaku is unlucky for this) he needs to really attack that ball harder ahead of holD up play.

with those he needs to adjust that aggression based on the size of the CBS he’s playing against.

if he can keep working he should bang a few goals in soon enough

I love his workrate, but he has only scored in three of the fifteen league games he's played for us - he needs a goal or two.

Agreed. He lacks that Premier League experience but that will come. He needs goals - his play deserves it.

I think he suffers from the attacking players around him for different reasons. With Jack, he holds onto the ball, rightfully so a lot of the time, and it doesn't always help Ollie's dynamism when he doesn't get things fast. From Anwar its similar but a bit different in that he takes time to deliver crosses and Ollie is usually surrounded by then. I think Barkley isn't quite the lengthy ball carrier Jack is and lays it off quicker which imo is better for Ollie.

I think Watkins thrives against a certain defensive line. Liverpool and Arsenal played to his strengths, Leeds probably should have as well. United should have as well but packed the centre midfield so that Maguire didnt have to play so far forward

Its up to Ollie to adapt and he can

United trusted Bailly could manage him physically (and he did - which he always will unless he has one of his trademark errors, he has plenty of pace and strength)... I think Ollie needed to find a way to be on Maguire’s toes not Bailly’s. But easier said than done. Agree with your last line totally.

Give the whole lot a rest and throw the game.

Watkins is vital to our system and even without goals he’s crucial but his current streak is what I was worried about. Just nothings gone in for him lately being a mix of poor finishing, no luck and VAR, this will really hit his confidence and that’s worrying.

He wasn’t great against United and towards the end did look knackered. Really hope something will fall his way sooner rather than later.

He was dead on his feet towards the end. To the point where he struggled to control the ball as his legs were so heavy.

He runs his knackers off every game. He’s getting chances and makes defenders work. The goals are lacking currently, but he is getting into decent positions fairly regular.

With a bit more luck the VAR goals would have gone for him and the pen goes in, it’s a completely different proposition then for him. It’ll come, he needs to work on his finishing, as @TrentVilla as been banging the drum on a specialist striker coach coming in, I whole heartedly agree!

This. He has 6 goals in the 5 league games Barkley has played (not including Brighton)

He has only scored in 3 games out of 15 so far. That's a goal every 5 games.

But he has scored more than 3 so it's masking how many points he has actually won us so far this season.  We all would be panicking and maybe we should be. If we even had Ings up top we'd be on 30+ points.

??

My post was clearly referring to him playing with Barkley. He has scored in 3/5 league games when they’ve played together, scoring 6 overall. He has missed a few chances and had some harshly ruled out, but he is more effective playing with a Barkley type sitting behind and Grealish on the left.

I agree with Ings, he’s one of my fav non-Villa players, but pretty sure we don’t have the cash to sign an English international striker.
