YLN
£20 million is the new £10million, which used to be the new £5 million which was the world record transfer fee paid for Maradona in 1982. We're just going to have to get used to players costing that much. Maybe in 20 years we'll look back on paying £20 million for Webster like we look back on paying £1.5 million for Mark Delaney
omariqy
Webster will force the move through I reckon. Chance to play on the biggest stage and probably the biggest club he is likely to play at.

Yes players are more expensive now but this nonsense of every championship player we look at being worth 20-30m is total garbage. I think we are partly the cause of this though, we just got promoted, all the club's know our owners are filthy rich and we just released half our squad and need to effectively buy almost an entire new team. With that in mind I honestly think most championship clubs are trying to fleece us, and why not?, we would probably try to do the same. I don't deny Webster might be worth 10-15m, same as benrahma and Phillips, but smacking 30m price tags on these players is just idiocy and opportunism. Luckily I don't think our owners will fall for it for one second. I mean Webster for 20-25m would be somewhere in the 30 most expensive centre backs in the world ever......definitely in the top 35 or so, madness. I could swallow 10-15m, rising to 20m with add ons for staying up etc for players like Phillips, Benrahama and Webster possibly, but anything more than that is just idiocy and any club who thinks they can get more, I would say goodbye and good luck. Without biased Bristol hat on, would you say he was worth anything like that mate? My comments when I first posted about him on this thread was that it would take £20m before I'd accept. Yes it's overpaying a bit but he is genuinely quality and among the best CBs in the division, and I can say that without any bias at all. I think WhoScored had him down as something like the 7th best performing player in the Championship last season- although that's taking what someone else posted without fact checking it myself. There's a part of me that believes that if he made the right move and had a good season in the Prem he would be in with an outside shout of making the England squad- not necessarily for a tournament, but a friendly. If it was Bristol City being linked with him as a Premier League side but still had the knowledge from having seen him this season my concern about the price wouldn't be to do with whether he has the ability to step up. But whether he is past his previous injury issues. 3
Popular Post KMitch
Why does everyone care about how much we pay for players now? Nearly always, the figures getting thrown around on Twitter are made up anyway. We don't know the budget or how much our shortlist of targets were quoted to us for. I really don't care if the club spends half a billion pounds on players this window, as long as we stay up and build a stable platform to grow the team upon in the future. 9
Vive_La_Villa
Wernt we linked with Target last summer? So let me get this straight. Out of all the left backs in the world both the previous management and the current management see a player that can’t get in to the Southampton team as our number 1 target for a left back? I smell more lazy bulls**t journalism with this?

MrSmirch
You could get a prime Van Persie for £20M a little while ago.

Think the fact we almost went bust has something to do with it. Not saying we will under these new owners but I’m taking nothing for granted. I think it’s perfectly reasonable for fans to have an interest on how the money the club has is spent. I’d be really concerned for example if we spent half a billion just to “stay up” as it’s reckless spending.

Him and Shane Long are bang average and don’t belong in the Premier League IMO. It’s one of the reasons a striker is the top priority for Southampton in this window. We shouldn’t be, and definitely won’t be, looking at Austin and rightly so. He’s the antithesis of Aston Villa under Smith - Old, Injury prone, lazy, no resale value, high wages.

Shane Long especially works extremely hard for his team whoever he plays for, I love his attitude to the game, he gives 100% in every match. Austin is more of a natural poacher, give him a chance in a match and he’ll score but he won’t do much else. I agree with you that we probably won’t be looking at either but it doesn’t mean they’re not good strikers for their respective teams. I can’t remember who said it recently but a manager said we won’t even be competing with the likes of Southampton and will have higher aspirations
