Would people rather we went back to hoofing it up to the big man? Agree. Teams will score goals against us...why is there so much concern that it could be from a mistake whilst passing the ball at the back ? Never understood the excessive noise about this. One of the main alternatives to possession from the back is to boot the ball up the pitch, where an ostensibly 50/50 challenge is often won by the defender. So you gift possession away anyway !

Unless it happens with alarming regularity. Would people rather we went back to hoofing it up to the big man? It's always the same with this kind of stuff. As soon as a pass is intercepted and leads to a goal people will be moaning that we're playing it out from the back too much. Same with stuff like zonal marking. As soon as someone scores from a corner where a team were zonal marking everyone goes mental. Or a sweeper keeper gets lobbed. But nobody bats an eyelid at all the times hoofing the ball to the opposition leads to a goal, or man marking leads to a goal, because it's seen as the norm. Just look at players like Walker and Stones. People love to laugh their heads off when they give away a goal with a wayward pass, yet their part of a record breaking, multiple title winning team. Because the benefits of what they bring to the team far outweigh the negatives. I think it'll be the same with Mings. His style of play will mean that occasionally he will get caught out and he might cost us a goal or two. And some people will probably go mad. But the advantages of that style of play when it works is huge and will be integral to how we play under Smith, so the benefits far outweigh the negatives. They're just less obvious.
Tomaszk
You can play the ball out from the back without being as casual as Mings appears. He always looked less comfortable in possession than Tuanzebe last year. I think he rates his ability highly, which should help him if he does have a cockup, carry on playing his game despite setbacks. I do have reservations about him this season, he'll be doing well if he doesn't lose his place all season long I think. He was a signing we ended up having to make almost and brings lots of positives off the pitch.

villalad21
If Maguire is worth 80 mill then 20 mill for Mings is an absolute steal.

According to Whoscored, Mings was dispossessed 0.2 times per game last season, Tuanzebe 0.3. To be honest they're so close and the sample so small that the difference is meaningless. Tuanzebe is a lot smoother, I think he's a better footballer all round, but there we go. Edited August 7, 2019 by dont_do_it_doug.

David Gower always “ appeared” to be casual, when, in fact, ( most the time) this was due to his class.

Playing Premier league footy will definitely improve him.

sidcow Posted August 10, 2019 VT Supporter Share Posted August 10, 2019 Strolled into The Premier League like he strolled into The Championship. Looked perfectly at home.
wazzap24
He was brilliant today. He should have stood is ground for the first, but I can see what he was trying to do. Other than that, he was immense in the air and on the deck. One of his best performances for me, despite the result.
Dr_Pangloss
I thought it was a mixed display, some really bad positioning at times that should have been punished but did do a lot of good things. Ultimately will be a very important player for us and a good player at this level.
Jareth
Got in front of everything, including their equaliser. Prem ready and bargain CB of the season.

Farlz
Engels Had the better first half but Mings in the second was fantastic. Monster in the air and made some vital blocks. Looks perfectly fine in the Premier League.
PompeyVillan
I thought he was excellent today, got in the end of everything in the second half. Ultimately he was overused. A bit of an odd movement for the first goal on the slow motion replay he looked as if he was desperate to not handball it and moved out of the way of the ball and a bit unlucky for the second. gurru991 Posted August 10, 2019 Visiting Supporter Share Posted August 10, 2019 I thought Mings had a pretty good game against tough competition. He was a steal at 20 mil .He certainly doesn't look out of place in the Prem.
Zatman
Yep him and Engels were pretty good. Spurs had actually no clear cut chances except Moura header in 1st half Edited August 10, 2019 by Zatman
Genie
I thought he was really good today, let's not forget just how busy he was. Did more defending than van Dijk does in a month.
