Leander Dendoncker

This guy was so good today. I have criticised Villa players previously, for lacking football intelligence. This guy is a very smart footballer. I’m really looking forward to seeing what he can do with a run of games.

I will say I think you lot are overrating him a tad. He was excellent today don't get me wrong but I just think you guys are comparing and contrasting him to McGinn and Ramsey in midfield who don't show for the ball, don't pass it and offer nothing defensively.

i dont think any (or many) are overrating him, its clear he is a steady eddie type DM, 6ft 2, well built and offers good defensive cover, strength and stability, can recycle the ball but nothing flash, i dont really expect him to do anything flash or exotic, but i do think having a player like Dendoncker to do the basics well and help cover the defensive lines with power, height and physicality really, really helps us to be a more balanced team.

Donk played in the pivot with Luiz, that allowed Luiz to double up with defensive duties, but it also allowed Luiz to drive forward, press and play higher up the pitch at times, knowing Donk had him covered.

My personal point was more, not that Donk was "amazing", but that he offers balance to the team, and is someone who just does the defensive basics for the team well and allows other players in the team to do their thing better also, he was great by just doing the basics well.

I just think, without being an exceptional player, he offers a very good balance to the midfield, doing what the teams need from his position.

if im making sense.

I thought he was key to how we played today, a specialist defensive midfielder who stood his ground and mopped up the midfield together with Luiz, defended the back four and played it simple. Calm and assured. Perfect to have him and Luiz as the two holding midfielders, big Donc taking some more defensive responsibility and winning everything in the air and Luiz being a bit more the playmaker.

He is exactly what we needed, an upgrade on Nakamba, someone who is a decent passer and who is strong and good in the air.

We still have Kamara coming back which means we also have depth there.

I mean, he was " garbage " last week, even though he actually did nothing wrong. lol

Solid and silently effective.

Because the last idiot played him in a position he had no clue about.

Would Martinez look good at right wing?

Two posts. Two games. Three days apart

VT in a nutshell.

Not really shows bad management. How many times was Whelan called crap during Bruceball but praised when Smith took over

Sometimes it isn't rocket science.

Stick him next to Dougie and they're going to work. There's obviously far more to it but in its simplest form, them 2 roaming makes sense.

Gerrard was paid a fortune and couldn't grasp the basics.

Play players in positions they are comfortable in, play players in positions they are good in, play players that all fit that system and watch them work with far more cohesion.

He was one of our best players yesterday. I thought there was a noticeable drop in our performance when he went off.

His calmness really does seem to rub off. Some players make you kinda nervous when they are on the pitch and some you just kinda trust. Donk is definitely the latter and I think he is what is needed for the players and fans alike

And when McGinn came on tbf. One had a point to prove, the other had just lost someone who really believed him in (too much, you might say).
