It depends how they want to spin the narrative, and I don't mean that in a negative way. Smith, (speaking days after Purslow's statement) said that Buendia was coming in regardless of the Grealish sale. He was brought in to play alongside him. By implication the others were not (i.e. Bailey & Ings). So from the original plan you could say we were willing to spend £34m of non-Jack money on Buendia and we've since spent £60m of the Jack money on the rest. Or, in light of the Grealish sale, they could just say the balance sheet is 100 in and 100 out so yeah we've spent it all.

But if they were willing to be £34m down while keeping Jack on the books then we've theoretically still got that £34m in the pocket ready to spend if needed.

I don't think money is the problem here. I genuinely think they are happy with their options/numbers in midfield and don't want to have to integrate more players into the squad this summer.

I think we're done as a result.

It's definitely possible. I guess it just depends whether they were planning on strengthening the defensive side of midfield before his sale and whether that's still on the cards or not. The constant JWP rumours. I also wonder whether JWP was on the cards until Southampton lost both Ings* & Vestergaard, and now they know losing him too in the same window would be tantamount to suicide and fan revolt, so that landscape has also changed.

* The JWP link pre-dated the Ings link

This, and also I think the club won’t pay what they feel is “over the odds” for a target.

We have tonnes of money now, and rich owners - we are going to say 'yes, just 3 more signings', and see the prices double.

I love this idea that other clubs only set prices/bargain for players based on press conferences.  As if the entire football world has no idea we've sold Grealish for £100m and are just pinning their hats on whatever Dean Smith says when asked about the potential of bringing in new players.

"No, we're not looking to bring anyone else in" = other clubs "Ah, Aston Villa haven't got much money so we can sell them <x> for £15m"
"Yes, we're looking to make 3 more signings" = other clubs "HOLY SHIT, VILLA HAVE ALL THE MONEY! SELL <x> FOR £50m!"

If you include Sanson as a summer signing (who arrived a bit earlier than planned), our signings are:

1) a striker,

2) a winger,

3) an attacking midfielder,

4)a box to box midfielder,

5) a left back and,

6) a right sided central defender.

That’s a pretty impressive haul that ticks off almost all the positions we were calling for before the window opened.

The only question would be if Nakamba would be replaced (seems unlikely to me) or if we would sign a backup keeper (probably not an urgent requirement).

In my mind having spent all that money and still having one midfielder in the squad with defensive qualities is naive. at best.

We are deploying non defensive minded players in that role when Nakamba is not playing and we know Marv's quality is suspect.....its creating imbalance imv.

This team has a tendency to be "Greedy for Goals " before any in game discipline is employed and we are being undone for it.....even now we are still linked with wingers and attack minded players, we need players to help us with "control and in game discipline."

What we have bought has been ok.....but we should not be finished, if we have any notion of moving up the league.....as we stand we will be lucky to finish 11th.

Allegedly. I haven't heard this from a tier 1/2 source though.

unless i missed something i thought it was widely understood from the reputable journos too that we submitted at least one bid?

i'd be interested to know what changed since that we were willing to spend big on a CM one minute then decided we didn't need one the next

Massive news - good to see the club supporting healthy lifestyles.

Is ‘Monster’ a DM? He sounds like he should be.

Also, I understand the need to build commercial revenue, but it’s still hard to accept deals with shite products/brands like this.

I know - unbelievable.

Its like the story when you've purchased a car and allegedly the salesman has a quiet word in your ear  "You got a really deal there mate - but I had to sell that one to hit my target"

When you take time to think you realise that its all phoney words. Everyone is after the highest price for players they are selling, and the lowest price when buying. Type of players villa are after likely to be more than one bidder so the 'were skint bros'  line just doesn't cut it.

I mean they're an official energy drink partner...I'm not sure there are that many companies out there it would be any better going for. Energy drinks are all terrible

It's not like 'official energy drink partner' is an essential role at the club though. It's like having Greggs as the 'official pasty partner' because they're all terrible too.

If we were even eve seriously in for him Pape Matar Sarr, looks like a hard one to complete this summer. Then Will Hughes for £6/7million would make sense IMO given how much Shakespeare rates him, knows the league and is technically very good player. We can then reassess next summer… starting to think that in terms of major deals we are now done due to the job doubt inflated fees being quoted… so expect Damsgaard to sign imminently then lol p

I don't think WH would get many 'whoops' if we signed him. But IMO would be a useful additional for a small outlay.

If we are happy with the midfield, Id still want a LW. Kamara being mentioned would be great.

As long as Ings and Watkins aren't in the same starting 11 I think we can get the right balance. If we are planning on starting both, I think we'll struggle.

Buendia, McGinn, Sanson would be a great pressing midfield. Nakamba, Luiz, Carney and Ramsay is fine for rotation.

AEG needs replacing ASAP

I would consider Paul Doyle a very reliable source. He's been the Guardian's midlands report for the past few years but has never come up with the usual ITK gossip that the local hacks come up with. He's more of a features writer who specialises in African football and has done in depth interviews with Nakamba and Samatta over the past couple of years. He doesn't get any currency out of pretending to be 'connected' to the club.

The JWP link is legit, I'm 99% sure of that - via a credible source who has been right about a couple of other things before anyone else. So the club must recognise that central midfield can be strengthened, and that it might be worth integrating more players.

My guess is that it's just mundane economics - they can't find a good enough player who wants to join, who's at a club willing to sell at a reasonable price. (Edit: and I think JWP fails the last test. We can't get a reasonable price out of Southampton.)
