looked at the arsenal team from last night, started 5 academy players, another 3 on the bench with Willock the standout player, in the last game they had 7 academy players and with the ability to make 5 subs

its obviously a long shot and unfair to hold it as an expectation but the impact of qualifying for that tournament in the next 2/3 years could be huge for our youth team, most of these kids breaking through at arsenal and Chelsea have broken through via the EL

Pleased in the interview on the website he said he compares himself to Pogba because that's exactly who he reminded me of. Bit of filling out to do but he's very tall, can never be a bad thing in the middle of midfield.

Incredibly composed in possession, worked space when there was none to be made and used the ball positively. He was playing against a predictably excellent City side featuring a few players that are now in first teams around Europe, and he was two years younger than them all.

Great. Honestly, the academy only needs 1 player like a Grealish or a Barry etc. To break through and it’s paid for itself 100 times over. How much is Grealish worth now, 80/100m? Purslow mentioned it when he started that we’d mismanaged the youth for so long. The addition of Harrison was massive for us as he came with quite a high rep. 

It’s all well and good signing a player for 30m Who can come and slot right in but I’d much prefer to produce a starlet or two and not have to pay the inflated prices on the market.

We are doing this the right way now.

Carney Chukwuemeka, 17, is widely considered to be not only one of the best players coming out of Birmingham but the entire country. The attacking midfielder’s swift progression to the first team, training under the head coach Dean Smith since last summer, meant that Chukwuemeka was part of the group that went into isolation for the third-round tie after a Covid-19 outbreak.

Last year Christian Purslow, the Villa chief executive, described him as “probably the best 16-year-old in England”. Having represented England at youth level, Chukwuemeka is believed to have the potential to follow in the footsteps of the club captain Jack Grealish by breaking into the first team.

He is also the latest on a conveyor belt of talent coming out of the Midlands. Chukwuemeka is in the year group below Jude Bellingham, the former Birmingham City midfielder who moved to Borussia Dortmund last summer. It is understood that Chukwuemeka has had offers from the Bundesliga but believes that his talent will help him to break through in the Premier League.

At 6ft 1in, he has the physical presence of a dominant box-to-box midfielder. Yet he is deployed as a No 10 for the under-23 side because of the outstanding technical ability that grabbed the attention of staff four years ago.

Chukwuemeka has been with the club since the age of 13, having been spotted by Villa when rising through Northampton Town’s academy sides. His older brother, Caleb, also played for Northampton and is still at the Sky Bet League One club.

The pair were born in Austria to Nigerian parents and moved to England at a young age. It was clear to Northampton that Carney had more talent, with Manchester City among the clubs looking to prise him away. Chukwuemeka chose Villa with the belief that the pathway to the first team would have fewer obstacles.

He signed a three-year deal at Villa Park in October when he turned 17. “We have been really pleased with his development and feel this contract will provide him with the platform to become a first-team player,” Mark Harrison, the academy manager, said at the time.

Yet, because of Chukwuemeka’s vast potential, City have kept tabs on him, as have Manchester United and Liverpool, while Juventus and Bayern Munich have monitored his development closely.

At Villa, there is little doubt that Chukwuemeka will be the next big thing out of England, following in the footsteps of Bellingham and Jadon Sancho. They just hope it happens in claret and blue.

Sounds like they'll be expecting him to be on the bench next season, and possibly starting 11 the season after.  Sounds like we'll need to offer him that as well if we want him to stay here. No emotional attachment to the club like Grealish, so may need a bit more persuasion to see our vision.

We'll be planning to blood the best youngsters as soon as possible. That will put us at the front of the queue for the best kids and should be exciting too.

We already have a young team. By the time players like Chuk Norris is ready, most of the current first XI will be at their peak.

Villa fans need to stop obsessing over what manure or others think of our players - we are no longer a feeder club. Over the next few seasons with the right investment and kids coming through we could easily be among the top 4-6 and challenging for more. The current ‘top 6’ (whoever they now are) do not have a divine right to be there.

Totally agree. There is not a single club more ambitious than us at the moment in world football or thats how it feels anyway.

So they've gone from the top of league bollocks to being 3 points behind city having played a game more, out of the cup, lost at home to the worst team in PL history and now with no signings in sight they're resorting to tenuous links to 17 year olds to get the fans excited

Chukwuemeka isn't a defensive midfielder like Nakamba, he's more of an attacker. I haven't watched as much U23 football as some, but from what I have, he looks like the most comfortable player on the ball I've seen at that level since Grealish. He and

Bogarde is the DM for the U23s at the moment, but even he from the little I've seen, looks like he'll develop into more of a box-to-box midfielder.

I think he and Bogarde are developing really nicely in that midfield double pivot - they're the Luiz and McGinn of our U23's.

The bit about Manchester United is one of those classic things where a journalist writes a piece and another journalist desperate to fill a page takes a line out of it and beefs it up into something that will clickbait the locals. There's nothing in it.
