Popular Post Villan4Life
https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/aston-villa-academy-carney-chukwuemeka-17778789 Quote Carney Chukwuemeka has recently broken into Mark Delaney’s under-23 side and is now playing against men, some of whom are seven years his senior. And the midfielder is the perfect example of what academy boss Mark Harrison is working to promote, insists chief executive Christian Purslow. Speaking at the Villa Supporters Trust’s AGM, Purslow said: “Frankly, I’m going to be brutal, 22-year-olds playing in an under-23 team means your system isn’t working. It means your system has failed because 22-year-old footballers at Aston Villa need to be in the first team. “The ultimate goal is to populate the under-23 team with 11 outstanding 16, 17 and 18-year-olds, then I will know it’s working. "And that will take years, not months. We need to be higher in recruiting the best eight-year-old, nine-year-old, 10-year-old, 11-year-old, 12-year-old, 14, 16, one a year that makes it and gets a professional contract at 16. “I want that player. We have one right now, probably the best 16-year-old in England, Carney (Chukwuemeka). Absolutely no debate, he’s starting for the U23s. “That’s what you want with your 16-year-olds. Not people who are not quite breaking into the first team, but staying around on contracts because it isn’t quite happening.” Harrison was only appointed during the summer after Villa poached him from West Bromwich Albion. It’s been all change at Bodymoor Heath with a new sparkling academy stadium recently installed, and Harrison is focusing on building a legacy of producing high class footballers to match their facilities. “It’s the single most important of our overall strategy,” added Purslow. “Nassef (Sawiris) and Wes (Edens) ask me about this more than any other subject because in the very long run, for this club to be truly sustainable is to have its own players coming through the system. "You have my word, I consider that the most important part.” 17
OutByEaster? Posted February 19, 2020 Moderator Share Posted February 19, 2020 He's a big un for 16 and he's got a very good attitude - I've only seen him briefly, but he's positive and keen to get into games. 1

Popular Post sne
Chukwemeka, name just rolls off the tongue. Good thing is if he get's knocked down he'd just get up again, they are never going to keep him down. I just hope he doesn't drink a Whiskey drink, and then drinks a Vodka drinkand then drinks a Lager drink, and then drinks a Cider drink. 4 2

New_Hope
We definitely need to be producing the equivalent Jack Grealishs for every position. Excited by what Purslow said but gonna have to wait a few years to really see the fruits of our labour. If we produced an equivalent of Jack for every position we might as well finish with football because we would be the best team in the world. We would actually complete football. 5

I remember all those players West Ham produced at the start of the century, Lampard, Joe Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick, Glen Johnson etc They all ended up being great players elsewhere whilst West Ham were yoyo-ing the divisions
Mazrim
That article is the best thing I've read all year. Absolute music to my ears.
sir_gary_cahill
Here are my thoughts, firstly Purslow shouldn’t be talking to the press about a 16 year old, no matter how good he is. I haven’t seen him play to my knowledge so I can’t comment on his ability but I did see Aaron Ramsey, his Villa and England u17 colleague for our U16s and he looked excellent. Again, I don’t want to put too much on him either as I have in the past

useless
He wasn't talking to the press, these comments come from Purslow's Q&A with the Villa Trust, gets asked about youth development at around thirty and half minutes. One thing that the Birmingham Mail article misses out is that he actually said that he was the best 16 yearo old in the country before we brought Barry back from Spain, still high praise of course though.
OutByEaster? Posted February 20, 2020 Moderator Share Posted February 20, 2020 Quote “Absolutely no debate, he’s starting for the U23s" Just on that, in so far as I can see, he came on as a sub in the last home U23 game - that's his first appearance at that level.
