Only2McInallys
I personally would rather stick with Smith even if we are in danger of relegation which I think is a strong possibility. Unfortunately the money we are spending on transfers (100 million plus)means relegation would be a financial disaster. I don’t think the owners can allow that to happen. This means Smith is under a a lot of pressure to start our PL campaign well. I have mixed feelings about the money we are spending ,on one hand we could be a strong mid table team but it means 3 or 4 defeats in a row and people will start questioning Smith. The media will also use this to criticise Smith and Villa. Part of me would prefer a lower transfer spend which accepts relegation as a possibility and would allow time for Smith to rebuild again in the championship if the worst happened. I know where you are coming from but the club has to go for it. I really hope we never hear the phrase ‘doing a Fulham’ during the season. But I think with the high energy we will play with we will shock a lot of teams. Edited July 15, 2019 by Vive_La_Villa
Zatman
I think patience is key as we will probably lose more games than we win. Luckily I think Purslow and co are not like some keyboard warriors and will give Smith time

Popular Post KentVillan
Really like this interview with DS. For those who don't have time to watch it all: Big focus on values and behaviours in pre-season, and making sure all the new players understand what our team ethic is. Love this. Happy with the progress we've made in the transfer window, and gives big credit to Suso and Purslow. Says he and Suso share a very similar view on what profile of player his needed. Laughs at a lot of the players we're being linked with - quite a few of them haven't even been discussed as options. Jota: Was always in the pipeline before Wembley. Believed he was Premier League quality at Brentford, and surprised he didn't go to a PL side then. Wesley: The only new signing who didn't know anyone at the club, but has settled in straight away. Speaks fluent Spanish, so happy chatting with Jota. Says his English is good as well. Chosen from a shortlist of about 5 strikers. Describes him as a player with a strong personality, a lot of hunger and desire who he liked from the first moment he saw him play, and whose personality off the pitch reflects the way he plays. Scores all kind of goals - long range, tap ins, penalties. Loan-to-perm deals: Wanted to keep the core of the squad, the togetherness, says dressing room just as happy as fans to get Mings, El Ghazi, Hause signings locked down. Guilbert: "Very, very good full back, impressing every day in training"... not much more on that Konsa: Says "he can do the lot", and thinks he's good enough to play for England one day. Targett: Describes him as "challenging Neil Taylor for that left back spot" - says he wants challenges in every position. Conor Hourihane: Sees him as a big part of the squad next season. Obviously a lot of this stuff is just diplomacy, and don't want to read too much into it... but to me it suggested that Jota is going to be starting 11, and that Targett may not be. Also that Wesley is going to fit right in. Exciting times. 5
Monsieur Hazdazler
I think he was being diplomatic with the Targett/Taylor bit. I don’t think you spend 11mil on him if you don’t intend on him taking the spot, but Taylor should know he has a chance if he performs well

If he isn't better than Taylor and therefore a guaranteed starter then we might as well have had a bonfire in a field of £12m worth of ten pounds notes.

Before anyone says it, Taylor did improve in line with the general uplift in results last year, but he isn't good enough for the Premier League. Delighted we've replaced him with Targett and will instantly fear the worst, if he gets injured or sent off.
Popular Post DCJonah
Both Smith and O'kelly have spoke really highly of Jota. I'm excited to see what he can do. Imagine the reaction from down the road if he starts performing well in the prem. Hilarious. 4

Some of the links out there are untrue. The Birmingham Mail will make about 64 'articles' out of this over the next week. Great interview though, he's miles ahead of pervious managers in terms of clarity, self-confidence without being cocky, knowing what he wants to do and how to do it, preparation etc etc. Same with O'Kelly, which was another great watch/listen. I'm glad the both of them now have the opportunity to really show what they can do at the highest level when the likes of Mark Hughes and Tony Pulis kept getting top flight managerial positions for years despite being absolute stains.

Make of that what you will.
