How can you have a kick up the ass to cut out mistakes? They are exactly that a mistake, he's not doing it on purpose

Of course he isnt doing it on purpose, no one is accusing him of that. But by learning from mistakes, and trying harder the next time and knowing what simple mistakes cost (your place in the team) he can cut them out.

Giving the ball away for 3 goals in 4 games that directly led to goals is not acceptable, especially for one so experienced.

If mistakes arent highlighted (and in a way not punished), a player would never improve.

But, it's not about giving him a kick up the ass or even learning. As you state he is an experienced player and would fully know that he made a mistake and knows how to rectify them. How many mistakes has the likes of Jedinak made that leads directly to a goal? He 2 in one game.

Yes he made a mistake, yes he needed a rest, but there's such an overreaction to it like he's the only one that has ever made a mistake.

He may not be everyone's favourite but he has been integral in us winning games this season.

Poor again and once again look better without him.

Tactics changed when he left the field, but did his job when he was on as we were winning 1-0.

If anyone can make a gif of when he threw himself to stop the shot at the edge of the box, would much appreciate it. :)

Funny how so many people see such massive difference in this guy's performances. New Westwood surely.

He is the latest scapegoat. Could have a great game but one misplaced pass and that is what will be remembered by many. Forget the rest of his performance.

It's going to be hard for him to shake that off.

He was good. Bjarnason (shockingly) was very good, but Whelan did absolutely nothing wrong, and made one excellent pair of tackles on the edge of the box when we were looking vulnerable. No problems at all.

Apart from giving away a dangerous free kick on the edge of the box, which could esily have cost a goal.

I think he crippled our midfield, yet again, personally.  He's decent enough defensively but doesn't enable us to get out at all, so Forest were able to just keep the ball and keep us under pressure.

As soon as he went off, that was completely changed.  Bjarnason hassled and pushed us up the pitch.  Give me that over the occasional block any day of the week.

Completely agree.  We looked so much better with Thor.

Villas main problem over the years is the lack of movement in the midfield and unfortunately Whelan is not helping the situation

He' lack of mobility often results in the ball going out to the full backs and them hoofing it long as there's no option inside.

Likewise when we attack there's no option for an easy pass backwards because he sits too deep because he can't afford to be to high up the pitch as he can' get back

Yes he gets a tackle in and a block now and then but he' passing and decision making is poor. He had a head in the first min from a Forrest long ball and instead of cushioning the header to grealish I think it was it went over him to a Forrest player and with one pass took him and grealish out of the game. Gets done for pace too much and often ends up 2 yards in front of the back 4 on the 18 yard box.

As a midfield i think we are one good player from a decent midfield that will produce better football and more attaking options.a more mobile player would help this.

Someone like woods from Brentford thinks always mobile, making passes, giving an outlet watched him play three times and has always pulled the strings against us. There's one from staff utd but cant think of his name.

Thor came on and the midfield looked more mobile...maybe a string of games with him playing there might help????
