No attempt at a defensive header, not sure he even reacted at all. He just let the ball smash off his bonce and then he just lay on the ground for the entire rest of the goalmouth scramble. He’s not atrocious with the ball at his feet (when he has a bit of time), but he’s too slow/old to be effective for us, even at this level. All I have to do is recall my playing days to prove that possible. Hourihane missed a sitter, in an overall good match, but it was an awful moment To at least partially agree with you, I think some are prone to apply harsh negatives overly broadly at a specific individual. I prefer to use negatives to describe actions rather than people. Whelan “is” not awful. Whelan had too many awful moments last night. I would prefer we use pretty much every other option in that position. Form can play tricks with the best of us, if you have ever played sport, unless you are amongst the best in the world. Attitude and approach is a bit more controllable and offers less excuse......thats my take on it.
avfc1982
I must be on my own here but I thought Whelan played really well the other night.

rodders0223
MOTM. Good one touch at times ,always where he need to be and kept it ticking over. Gave Leeds a right schooling. Edited April 13, 2018 by rodders0223
bobzy
Yeah, thought he was very good tonight - best game for us by a mile. Good awareness for his clearance (almost) off the line as well.

andym
Yes he was good tonight, made some really good one on one tackles to prevent some potentially tricky situations.
HanoiVillan
He was really really good - always in the right place. Depressing that there were half a dozen people sat round me slagging him off throughout the match.
mikeyp102
Not the first time he’s been good for us. Vital squad player. Like Jedinak has his uses against different types of teams, but can’t play every week.
sparrow1988
Was very good tonight. Soild - nothing spectacular and no **** ups. I would take that every time he plays if I'm honest.

Dr_Pangloss
Definitely put in a good shift but we were totally overran for most of the second half in midfield and that's because Whelan and Onomah could not dominate the midfield.
