Saudi Pro League

The TV money that Premier League has gotten, has partly come from regions with more of a star culture in football than football club culture. Meaning that if the Saudi league get enough top stars, the attractiveness of PL in parts of the world may fall, thus reducing the price of the TV rights. Maybe not the first year, but eventally.

Ruben Neves on his way there, £47m transfer fee agreed with Al Hilal.

Quote

Wolves have agreed a 55m euro (£47m) deal to sell captain Ruben Neves to Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal.

The 26-year-old Portuguese midfielder Neves had a year left on his contract.

He said at the end of last season he was ambitious amid interest from Barcelona.

However, Barca have not been able to come up with an acceptable offer and Neves has taken the option of becoming the latest big-name player to join the Saudi league.

How can anyone be surprised by this. Money took over football long ago. This is the natural progression of things. Maybe  UEFA will wake up when the Asia Champions League starts to usurp them. But of course the more likely scenario is the club World Cup just becomes bigger and takes over the continental trophies to everyone’s financial benefit…

It seems like a lot of these clubs are owned by the wealth fund (ie the government) so whats stopping them giving cheap player loads to Newcastle? It stinks.

And of course buying all the Chelsea players that they don’t want for inflated fees. Yes, Saudi Arabia also own Chelsea through Clearlake.

I’d like to think the PL can get its act together within the next 12 months and  close any loopholes around this.

The Saudis bought a chunk of Clearlake Capital, the fund that owns Chelsea recently - and it's rumoured that they're now the majority shareholder in Chelsea - there's been some talk in today's papers that Chelsea will be able to offload some of their multitude of fringe players to the Saudi league for very generous prices, thus allowing them the room under FFP to keep spending. It's a mess - the rules on football finance and club ownership have all the regulatory strength of wet loo roll.

Chelsea being able to sell players for a lot of money to help with FFP isn't a new thing because of the Saudi League spending big, that's always been the case for them and why they've always had an advantage over other clubs when it comes to FFP, all the 'top' clubs that hoard the better players are the same; if this Saudi League wasn't spending big this summer, Chelsea would still be selling players for big money to clubs in Europe to help their situation as they have done in previous seasons.

Sorry but i cant agree with this. Saudi clubs are owned by PIF which is direct links with chelsea and own newcastle they are basically passing players between their clubs and the massive difference is they are stupidly wealthy.

Clubs in europe you can negotiate lower prices as thats all you can afford. Lets say for example we wanted hudson odoi but we are only willing to offer 20m,  sorry not good enough we will sell him to our saudi friends for 40m so we get double the amount and can get around FFP.

It stinks

Ah it's all **** already.

Was hoping to be able to enjoy these owners for a bit.

If it wasn't so sad it would be funny.

Villa, finally overcome the decades of under spending and poor management to sit on the precipice of a return to the top table, and the game decides to go with the nuclear option this time.

Very much the start of a rapid end to the game.

We're just not meant to enjoy nice things here.
