I think people are being a little harsh on Neves. Its a job for him and for all we know he probably doesn't like football like others. Batistuta and Nakata and a few more didnt like football

Neves going there is probably more of a Mendes thing than any conspiracy relating to Newcastle; Mendes probably done a deal with them whereby if they overpay for Neves he will make sure he sends other players there way, from Wolves alone Moutinho and Adama being linked with moves to the Arabian Peninsula, they're signing a lot of superstar type players but if they want to improve the overall quality of the league, they're probably going to have to pad the squads out with some players the next level down in terms of quality, otherwise it really will be like the Chinese league, whereby they had a few top players from Europe but the rest of the team had to be made up Chinese players.

Saudi League isn't bailing Chelsea out, Chelsea have been selling players to get around FFP since FFP existed, it's not a new thing this season because a few of their players are going to Saudi, in the last six years they've made around seven hundred million from player sales, they've got a squad packed with big name players so will be able to sell them whether the buyers are in Saudi or Europe, if Saudi league wasn't spending big then they would have no problem selling the likes of Kante, Aubameyang, and so on to other teams in Europe.

In terms of being able to spend this summer Chelsea were always going to be okay, as can always sell a couple of players, could probably sell a bunch of U21s for tens of millions and have a decent amount to spend just from that.

In terms of raising money I bet they actually raise more money by selling players to teams in Europe this summer than they do by selling players to teams in Saudi Arabia.

The Neves example shows they're paying way above market rate for whatever they deem they want.

The real value of Neves was the £20-25m being offered by other clubs.

The players they sign from Chelsea will go for much much more than they'd go to one of the other European clubs you mention. Most of them are skint, and those that aren't don't want Chelsea rejects that finished in the bottom half of the PL

It helps when you have someone buying and selling in the same deal. People like Mendes should be banned too.

Chelsea getting a $900m investment by Newcastle’s Saudi owners into their parent company & then selling their unwanted players to the Saudi league for big money wages to clear their FFP.

Might be a coincidence of course. It isn't obviously but...

Chelsea sell their unwanted players every summer without any help from Saudi Arabia, it's exactly how they've been operating. Seems people are desperate to see a conspiracy.

And lets see how much they actually get for the players that go there, I bet it's not much than what they would have got for the players if they sold them to European teams, the players themselves will get much more though.

Neves costing as much as he did is most probably a Mendes thing, he manages to sell players for much more than they're worth, but some players he will sell on for much less than they're worth, see also Wolves vastly over paying for Silva.

Problem is football doesn't really have sensible market rates and neither Wolves or PIF are complaining about the prices

Its dodgy but is no real solution to it that can be enforced

It’s ridiculous the league are allowing these Saudi transfers to happen. It’s essentially money laundering for FFP purposes. Sales to connected parties should have the transfer fee fixed by an arbitrator to ensure independence. Or just scrap FFP altogether so it’s a free for all but at least everyone has the same opportunity. As it is, different teams are playing by different rules.

The fees for these Chelsea players are going to be very interesting. Especially when the PIF is funding the deals whilst investing in Chelsea’s parent company. There’s a very clear conflict of interest.

I dunno, it's so subjective

We can say mendy is merely OK and that he's worth let's say £30m but they sell him for £50m and we cry foul... He was voted the best goalkeeper in world football 2 years ago and he's better than the £80m keeper Chelsea have already skewed the market with

I'm theory he has to be worth less than Onana

If man City signed neves for £50m we'd all probably agree it's a bit rich but there wouldn't be the calls of it being outrageous and a crime against football

The outrageous thing will be how and when these guys come back to European football

This is the thing. It could be argued that some of the prices are fair. But they’re not independent transactions to a third party. They’re transfers to a connected party. Furthermore, that connected party has no FFP obligations whatsoever so can essentially be used as a vehicle to launder money in and out of their chosen premier league team at will. So the transfer fees are open to exploitation whether one considers them fair on a case by case basis or not. Needless to say, Sky made no comment on this issue in their report.

Didn’t take long!

That last paragraph, especially last sentence, is so depressing. I can't believe the Telegraph gave it air time. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy and helps make their fiction true. **** off

The Saudi spending splurge, meanwhile, is part of the kingdom’s Vision 2030, which aims for the revenue of the league to increase to £400 million annually by 2030. State sources are defiant over deals being offered. They point to the rapid success at Newcastle in recent years, saying Western scepticism is being overcome.
