Yeah, think we were definitely interested but they’re holding firm on not selling, as is their right and we’re not going to be sucked into massively overpaying. Dead in the water I reckon.

Will be this season or not at all as next season Liverpool will be sniffing around.

Has been a target for a while so I can't see us suddenly dropping our interest in him. He's the sort of player who links defence midfield and attack in open play and is a level above from set pieces, when we get ourselves a set piece expert coach.

Hope you’re right, he’s my number 1 choice.

Everyone seems to be including him in their proposed team formations for this season, despite the fact he's not our player. Have I missed anything other than random twitter news that suggests we're seriously still interested?

Never really got excited about this one. Fairly good player, good at set pieces but so is Conor. Think we should be aiming higher. Steve Sidwell kind of signing if it happens.

He's a step up from Stevie Sidwell imo.

Can close this one now the Southampton CEO has publicly stated he will not be selling JWP.

Until next summer when they're relegated...

I think this and trying to sign ESR shows the difference between having ambition and actually pulling things off.

has he?  I've read what he said and unless he said otherwise and he never said that.  The best I can see is the below...thats not saying he's not for sale.

I never thought we could get him from day dot but I still havent seen anything definitive apart from a general interview from the CEO

Given the comments from Southampton, seems like it would take an obscenely over-valued bid to get him out. Much as I’d really like him here, it reaches a point where the economics of a deal don’t make sense.

Really depends how much the management and board want him and how much they feel he could affect us.

The problem is how do you value a player?  Is JWP worth 25m, 30m, 40m, 50m?  Is he worth 30m but not 35m.  It's like the whole debate of Ings at 29, is he worth 25m? a significant amount of people said No because of his age but then Lukaku goes for 97.5m at 28 and Kane is 100m+ plus if he goes yet we have a striker, a year older for 25m plus add on whose non-penalty goals tally is up there with the best in the league.

Everything is gut feel with a bit of comparison around it but those who really want him will happily pay 40-50m for him but those less bothered I assume wont go past say 30m and rather look elsewhere.

The more they publicly comment the more likely Southampton will sell.

Agree with you, but this statement (which he didn’t need to make) is directed as much at Villa as at his own fan base, imo.

He didn’t say he wasn’t for sale, but highlighted all the reasons why he’d cost a fortune.

Once it gets north of £50m - the kind of figure I’m guessing they want - you really can start looking at great quality UCL proven players in Europe.

The Serbian fella at Lazio springs to mind.

I honestly can't see how they would turn down a bid in the region of 40m for JWP. If they need the money, surely that will tempt them?
I also think a lot will come down to the player. If he wants to leave, then he will make it difficult for Southampton.

I don't know where I stand on JWP. In one sense, he's the perfect player as he gives us specialist set piece quality, leadership and knows the league/wont take time to settle. On the other hand, I'm sure you could find a better player for 15m less on the continent.

Taking money out of the equation, he improves us but we still need to replace Grealish so taking money out of the equation isn't an option!

I'm pretty confident Buendia is Grealish 2.0 and I'm guessing Smith is too.
