So annoyed that our hesitation to sack Smith has led to us missing out on both Moyes and Pearson

At this rate all the best crap managers will be taken by our rivals

Fingers crossed Norwich don't nick Steve McLaren from us or we really are doomed

Alan Pardew went to ADO Den Haag as well before we had time to snap him up.

Found this an interesting thread on Twitter, and a more realistic/encouraging shout than some of the frankly bizarre stuff on here.

I'm not on board with this notion that Smith needs to go as he's still working with an almost entirely new team whose position belies what some of the absolute hysterics from Villa fans would have you believe.

It's hilarious to go from the abuse that was dished out to Bruce last year to now people actually wanting a manager in a similar mould as him. If you want a stop-gap manager then you're getting what you wished for when we only find ourselves in this same position you're losing your minds about now slightly further on down the line.

I like Smith but there's definitely elements that have been missing from our game that have been noticeably missing since he's come in that he was meant to be more of a specialist at previously. That's something that needs addressing - quickly - and IF he were to be replaced we need a more progressive manager in that can bring those things such as properly pressing up the pitch, maintaining possession etc. We've had teams like Brighton come to Villa Park and look entirely more composed on the ball, which shouldn't be happening, and games like yesterday where a team of a similar level to us are pressing high up the pitch and not letting us play out, which is something I can't say I've seen us do well all season.

I was sceptical of Smith in the beginning and he won me over and then some, I'm hoping he can do the same now. If not then we need to get it right, not pie in the sky dreams like Poch or complete has beens. Some of the reactions from yesterday from Villa fans has me in complete despair, up there with Cabbage Gate.

If Smith wasn’t a Villa fan, everyone would be going ape he hasn’t been let go.

Being a Villa fan should have no bearing on whether he stays or goes

No, I don’t think it is, we really have to be more patient, just look at our management changes since MON departed in 2010:

Houllier, McLeish, Lambert, Sherwood, Garde, [Black!], Di Matteo, Bruce and now Smith. As Lambert was here 3 years, that’s more than one a year.

All bring in new players, new systems. We have nearly gone bust in that time. I think we just want some stability and it’s going to take time. Also we need to remind ourselves we replaced outgoing ageing players with avg £10m players, hardly extravagant, but who can afford the profile of player we needed under FFP on that scale. It’s a long game, let this group develop together, it might take another season in the Championship and one or two high profile players leaving, but we will be stronger for it in time I am sure of that.

Our owners have very deep pockets so can afford to weather the storm for the benefit of the long game.

There's no doubt that if he wasn't a Villa fan then most would be calling for him to be sacked, eight defeats from eleven games, and so far points wise this is our worst ever premier leagues season apart from the one when we were relegated. If Neil Harris for example had have taken over us last season and had have gotten us promoted but performed in the premier league as Smith is performing now he wouldn't be getting anywhere near the same level of support. Smith has to improve or he will be sacked unfortunately, although I still have hope that he can turn things around.

This is the funniest thread ever. Yes we're Aston Villa, yes we have history blah blah... we are currently a newly promoted championship club, full stop... anyone wanting Allardyce needs to go and have a cat scan, Poch wouldn't come to Villa and I doubt Allegri has even heard of the West Midlands. We either give Smith the rest of the season or we get rid now. But if he is replaced by someone like Allardyce then we have learnt nothing.

When Purslow spoke after the playoffs, he talked at length about long term thinking and the fact that knee-jerk reactions and lack of planning is what got us in the mess in the first place. He has openly said that we were promoted a year ahead of what they thought was realistic, nobody expected Smith to go on a 10 game run and win the playoffs. But we did.

We had to strip the squad of overaged players, players that had come to the end of their use, loan players and players on big salaries. It left a huge gap, which is why we spent big on a new squad - you all know this. The players signed haven’t been as good as we’d hoped for, that can’t be denied, but for an average of £10m each what did we expect?

I see a lot of fans compare us to Sheffield United, man-for-man we’re better than them, right? For some yes, for some no. The big difference with them is that they’ve had Wilder for three and a half years, drilling the squad in a way of playing that works. He hasn’t just walked in and taken over a new team of strangers and magically achieved results. None of us know whether Dean will pull it back and keep us up, I hope he does and I think most of you do too. The pressure’s on him, patience has run out halfway through our first season back.

I’d be hugely worried if Smith was sacked at this point, especially with the ink on a new four year contract still drying. I feel the frustration watching Villa, it’s been that way for years and it’s back again. I just don’t think we should sack him now and gamble on a short term fix again. Give it time, Mings will be back soon, McGinn in March, a couple of new signings and an upturn in form and we can be safe.

UTV

The big issue i have is the style and lack of system  that  way we continually  apply  . Its not working but we continue with the same week in week out. Unfortunately teams are playing all around us with ease. I personally don't thing the back 4 are to bad but the midfield offer nothing in protection to them particularly the wide players . This then leaves the full backs constantly exposed.

WE need to defend as a team , were not doing this or even look like anything is being applied by the coaches . My biggest   issue the lack of heart and basic football , this is a coaching issue and needs to be addressed. The coaching philosophy has to change or we will be in trouble. Lots of opinions on here but for me Dean is out of his depth and the staff supporting him .

Not true at all. All season I've said I'd love to finish 17th as I really don't think our team is that great. We were 2 or 3 players short without injuries imo. We're just 1 point off 17th and we have obvious injury problems at the minute.

I don't know what everyone was expecting this season, but I suspect it was too much given our squad.
