Or maybe a little bit frustrated on his behalf, is a better way of putting it. Most of his appearances for us were in that first season back which I think it’s fair to say was hard work to make that step up for the entire squad. To an extent, I’m giving most a pass for that season, I’m not going to hammer anyone too badly given the situation. After that, it’s mostly bit part appearances for us. Then he has a little renaissance when Gerrard first arrives (wins the fans player of the month). Then gets injured and that little purple patch is a distant memory. Maybe those few games were the outlier and it was felt that he wouldn’t be a suitable option for us. We can talk about getting his wages off the books, fine. But I think there’s always going to be players in the squad earning 30/40 grand a week and aren’t featuring. That’s the way it is and those wages are going to be higher if the club wants to be higher up the league. Marvelous is one of those signings that I feel we had to make. If just to have cover. If I remember rightly it felt like the options were Phillips for £25m or Nakamba and Luiz for the same total cost. I think we made the right, more sensible choice. Could we have got someone better to battle it out with Luiz and McGinn for a starting position, yes. I don’t know who, but there’s probably someone. We could also have bought someone a lot worse. Like a few of these peripheral players, I won’t get misty eyed about Nakamba, but he’ll leave with a tip of the hat from me. 9 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I don't think what you've said is mutually exclusive with wanting him to leave to get his wages off the books.
