TRO
4 hours ago, DaveAV1 said: What I meant was that we don’t need a specialist DM, we need good ball playing central midfielders that can be flexible. I think Smith is assembling a team of players that can to some extent interchange, particularly in midfield. Naturally some will be more attack minded and generally play in more advanced areas of the pitch. I’m not saying that defensive duties won’t be more suited to some players and they will generally play deeper, but I don’t think we’ll play with a dedicated DM, like we did with Jedinak, who’s job was quite specifically to guard the central defence. Basically it will be more dynamic, but players will be used to their strengths. I think McGinn will be everywhere so at times he’ll cover defensive duties, Jack probably not so much as he’ll almost certainly used more forward supporting the strikers rather than defenders. It’s probably just semantics what we call them specifically. I think what you mean is we don't need a limited DM ......but that's usually what you get in the lower echelons of league football......The very best DM's like Busquets, Makalale, Keane, Viera could all play. We are in a different league now and can expect more fulfilled talent.

But I also agree that signing another midfielder would be a good thing. 100% agree with this, and completely disagree with the notion of dropping our most potent creative force in favour of a more defensive midfielder in certain games. There is 0 value in inviting pressure onto ourselves in the hope that we can keep the opposition out, and I’m sincerely hoping that that this flawed way of thinking left the club in the same box as Steve Bruce’s mug and family photos when he cleared out his office. We May well need to defend deep at times given the level of the opposition we’ll be up against, but we need players exactly like Grealish on the field that means that they can’t afford to have their entire team in our half like a battering ram because of the lack of offensive counter threat. Besides, as you say, he has really shown extraordinary efforts in tracking back and disposessions and closing down of the opposition. He is far from a ‘luxury’ player. I agree having the personnel on the bench that can close out the last 15-20 minutes of a game will be handy, but to consider starting with 2DMs and a box-box is the kind of defeatist attitude I’d hope Smith doesn’t believe in.

useless
Just because we might decide not to play Grealish as one of the midfield three in certain games, doesn't mean to say that he has to be dropped, or that the player who replaces him in that three man midfield has to be a defensive midfielder, in some games we might require a Defensive midfielder, and two box-to-box midfielders, and oui I know that Grealish in a way is more of a box-to-box midfielder these days, but not really in the traditional sense of the description. There's nothing defensive about having a three man midfield of Luiz, Hourihane and McGinn, with Grealish and El Ghazi in front of them for some games.
