Douglas Luiz

I doubt the work permit will be a quick one. How long was it we were waiting for Wesley to be confirmed? A week? Luiz has already had several work permit applications rejected so I doubt it will be a quick process.

It could get rejected again. I think we are getting ahead of ourselves.

So you want none ball playing central midfielders. How does that help Jack and SJM? Surely players who are comfortable on the ball are always an asset to their team mates?

Why does being a defensive midfielder/holding midfielder mean you can’t pass a ball? The way I read the comment was that we won’t play a DM because our central midfielders can handle defensive duties. Well if you plan to have Grealish and Mcginn in our midfield, and they’re doing defensive duties, then they are going to be held back. You need a DM, holding midfielder, anchor or something to get the best out of our already offensive minded midfielders.

I've got a feeling Purslow has a mate on the exceptions panel 😉

I can’t see anyone saying no to Purslow. He doesn’t seem like the kind of guy you want to get on the wrong side of.

Even Smith seemed a bit nervous in the interview when he was sat next to him. He’s normally quite relaxed.

That's a good point, Purslow seems like a supremely confident kind of person, very much like James Bond, only in a different field.

I think in some games we might not be able to afford the luxury of having Grealish as one of the midfield three, we might have to play him in the stead of one of the wingers, and use a more tradional midfielder in his place in the middle. That's where signing both Luiz and Phillips (or an alternative) would come in. That and the fact that it would just be handy to have an extra player who can play DM should Luiz get injured.

I'd imagine his work permit application isn't as forgone as Wesley's was so Villa are not confident enough to announce it subject too.

Wesley’s announcement took a little while - maybe a week?

This. The option to be a bit more defensive against the top teams would be useful. I think with our players, we could have a pretty effective Plan B counter attack when we’re under the kosh

What I meant was that we don’t need a specialist DM, we need good ball playing central midfielders that can be flexible. I think Smith is assembling a team of players that can to some extent interchange, particularly in midfield. Naturally some will be more attack minded and generally play in more advanced areas of the pitch. I’m not saying that defensive duties won’t be more suited to some players and they will generally play deeper, but I don’t think we’ll play with a dedicated DM, like we did with Jedinak, who’s job was quite specifically to  guard the central defence.

Basically it will be more dynamic, but players will be used to their strengths. I think McGinn will be everywhere so at times he’ll cover defensive duties, Jack probably not so much as he’ll almost certainly used more forward supporting the strikers rather than defenders. It’s probably just semantics what we call them specifically.

Douglas won't be a destroyer-type DCM, like (say) Jedinak, more a quarterback-type - playjng mainly at the base of a midfield 3, putting tackles in and spraying passes upfield - but with the ability to get forward, box-to-box style when the opportunity arises.

Douglas just seems so wrong - not Brazilian at all. We have to call him Luiz.

And I hope you're right.

Looking back through his thread, Wesley’s transfer subject to the work permit was announced on 13th June and finally confirmed by the club on 2nd July, so just shy of three weeks. That’s not saying it took that long to process, but that’s how long it was between announcements by the club regarding the transfer.

My guess is, assuming it all goes ahead, this will just be announced as being done when all the paperwork has been completed. No “subject to...” caveats. I hope.

Also I wonder if he could be the best replacement for Grealish should he get injured.  When we missed Jack last year our team ground to a halt and we can't afford that again.  It's why I think there is still a chance we are after Phillips as well.

Deano did manage to really rattle Purslow by saying he wanted to win the league next season, referring to the PL. Very funny. Purslow could hardly choke out words of agreement he was so taken aback.

I think this hugely underestimates how good Grealish is defensively. But I also agree that signing another midfielder would be a good thing.
