Chris Samba

Watched a half of each game and Samba was the guy who stood out for me, now a lot of very bad players have looked good in pre-season before , but he looked as sharp as anyone . there is a good chance that he is a better option than Richards or Elphick.

i love how it seems like everyone's opinion of him has turned based off of one friendly against a part-time team lol. it means very little. bruce will have learned a lot more from just seeing him in training matches.

I'd rather their opinion was based on watching him play than based on his name alone.

True , but until the crushing reality of real football starts , this and wild transfer speculation is all we have so we might as well enjoy it.

He has been straight training for about a bloody year, he should look sharp. lol

He has the turning speed of the titanic and will get beaten by anyone with an ounce of pace but i could see him having his uses with someone quick next to him against the more physical taller strikers that will try and rough us up

I would really enjoy seeing any striker trying to rough him up this season! ;)

I remember villa 3:2 qpr. Him and benteke had a great battle. I would say that duel ended in a draw with each of them getting the better of each other a couple of times each

Tbf he has the potential to become a bit of a cult hero, just because he will dominate in the air still and everyone kind of expects him to be rubbish, so anything half decent he does will be praised as if he's Maldini, but even against Telford there was one moment when one of their quicker players had a run at him and he barely managed to get a block in, against any half decent attacker that would probably have led to a goal. I wouldn't trust him in our team as things stand

Agreed with the thought that we really shouldn't sign him on full time, however I'd much prefer him if given a choice between him an Richards.

Although I think Bruce is interested, I highly doubt we'd help him train and then he goes and joins another championship club.

I actually thought he played well last night, an absolute unit and won a lot in the air.

Would be interesting to play him in one half of the game against Watford to see how he gets on against superior opposition (Watford and superior opposition just isn't right)

hope this works out for both parties...  I really don't rate Elphick as a player and not even going near Richards and with Baker forever injured, he could be a useful cheap addition to the squad

Pecking order for centre backs (IMO):

  1. Chester
  2. Terry
  3. Baker
  4. Jedinak
  5. Elphick
  6. Samba (if signed)
  7. Every other player in both the first team and youth team
  8. All those kids in China Tony posted in Villa kits
  9. Nobody at all
  10. Richards (potentially)

With Samba it depends on shape that Bruce is going to play. If he wants to play 3 at the back, I think we will need the cover and I think Samba could suit that just fine. We would have 5 specialist centre backs with De Laet and Jedinak able to play there also in addition to the kids. The position is more than covered. Even if he wants to go play 2 CBs then I can see merit (as back up only) but will mean Richards going  and possibly Elphick as well. By no means I think he should be playing week in week out but he wages would be far less than most and he can provide experience/cover so can see the benefit. I think that it will depend on who we can ship out as to whether we sign him.

I really couldn't make my mind up about Samba last night watching him in the friendly.

He looked super calm and composed when dealing with stuff, but then i also couldn't help feel that was because the guy was reacting/moving so slowly that he couldnt even look alert or frantic if he tried.

Will need to see more, against better (and quicker) opposition to know for sure

Thing is, he's a beast in the air and that's a seriously potent weapon in the Championship (at both ends of the pitch).

If we played with 3 CB's I see no reason why we wouldn't look at signing him, the difficulty of course is that you probably could ill afford to have him and Terry playing together even as part of a set of 3 CB's.

Plus, he's a fans favourite already going off the reaction of those that were there last night.

If we do sign him that rules out the 'let's rough em up tactic' any opposition may be planning!

It will be like the time a fired up Anichebe span around to confront the bloke that had dared go in hard on him...only to be faced with the hare glowering at him....comedy gold!

  10. A random fan picked from the Holte end
  11. One of the chairs from the canteen
  12. One of the chairs from the skip in the car park
  13. One of the sandwiches from the canteen
  14. A traffic cone
  15. One of the serviettes from the canteen

There. Fixed that for you. 10. onwards would all be more mobile than Richards

I have no issue with us signing Samba as long as it is for a sensible wage, which I would expect it would be given that he does not seem to have any other offers.
