Neil Taylor

One For The Road

He was never a scapegoat. He's been absolutely terrible, very often to blame for moves breaking down and not letting us get a foothold in games.

I hope he doesn't have the chance to express himself, I don't want him making another appearance for us. A lucky lucky man he was handed a ridiculous contract.

No chance we'll get rid of him. No one will take him for free.

Taylor's a guest on the latest episode of the Elis James' feast of football podcast. It's an interesting listen if like me you're filling up your working day listening to podcasts.

They mainly talk about his time with Wales and Swansea, but they talk about Villa a lot too. He seems like a top bloke.

Listened to this last night and really enjoyed it from start to finish, which is rare for an interview with a footballer.

Seems very likeable and down to earth. Can understand why he was kept around, as he must be a good influence on the dressing room. He has the right character, just sadly a bit lacking in quality.

He did imply at one point that Villa’s wingback experiment had been a disaster. Don’t know if anyone had picked up on that?

I thought that. He said something like it had been a disaster at some of the clubs he's played for when they've tried it. He's only played for three haha.

Yeah I got that and thought - it was only a disaster for him because he cannot fill the wing back role as he isn't forward thinking enough. Seems like a decent bloke but I prefer a decent player at LB

He made a more reasonable point, though, which was that wingback is easy if your team dominates possession, but if they keep losing the ball you spend the whole match sprinting back into defence.

Yeah which you are never going to do when every Neil Taylor pass is a lofted one down the channel and out for a goal kick...if you're lucky. Usually just under hit right onto the oppo's chest.

Wales played 3 at the back a lot of times as well

Watched some Wales euro 2016 games in last week and Taylor was pretty decent in their 3-5-2 although it helps having Bale covering you and there wasn't that needed to get forward and be an attacking outlet.

Seems the talk on a Welsh forum is he's never been the same since he was involved in the Seamus Coleman broken leg tackle. That was in March 2017 so only a month after joining.

I thought he was a decent player at Swansea but been very average at best. Giving out 4 and a half year contracts to these players at championship level was another great Xia-Wyness-Bruce decision, him, Lansbury and Hogan all have 12 months left.

So you’re saying we should sign Bale... I’m listening...

He seemed really shaken up by the Coleman thing at the time. Not just the injury either but being made into a hate figure in some quarters.

That's quite interesting and I think he is spot on. It works for Man C. It doesn't work for us in the PL when we don't have possession, don't have a midfield that is good enough defensively to cover for the wing backs rushing forward, and don't have CB (except Mings) fast enough to cover.

Apparently Dean Smith has noticed the same, hence he has put Konsa at right back and Targett is staying back more than before.

On another note I don't get the critisism of Taylor, he was steady and reliable and played a big role in us going up. I think he is a specialist LB, seldom has a bad game, reliable and good positioning wise, he's not that good going forward and nowehere near Targets left foot, but reliable and also works hard. You very seldom see any howlers from him. I like him a lot and am happy with him as back up, great to have in the Championship.

That's not correct, he is quite stable with his passing. Agree that he fairly often lofts it forward, but it's also often in situations where he doesn't have many alternatives. Other players we have, like Hause in the last game couple of games, tries something stupid and looses the ball or plays a stupid back pass, Taylor doesn't, he plays it safe lofting it forward. The right thing to do if your team mates don't show up for the pass.
