McCormack? Plus to be fair, Gestede is capable of being a beast if utilised properly. We also have Grealish etc to go 4-5-1. Then again I just realised AFCON also means Adomah is gone so depletes our attacking force quite sharply. If we had more options in midfield (AM) etc we would be fine. Hopefully Tshibola will be fit by then too. Really not sure if it's worth wasting money on another striker.

Nor am I. I was thinking about a loan deal.

Jedinak is 65 years old, and travels the world to play for Australia.

At some point will get injured, leaving us with only Westwood and Gardner (Tsibola is made of glass).

Before looking at adding our 8th Striker to the squad we MUST prioritise a midfielder.

Aston Villa: The players Colin Calderwood could recommend to Steve Bruce

Villa's new assistant manager will aid the recruitment drive in the future so who could he recommend to the club?

A new set of eyes and a new batch of recommendations.

Assistant manager Colin Calderwood will chip in with his thoughts as Villa’s recruitment department continue to plan for the long-term future.

Technical director Steve Round wants input from the coaching team to ensure Villa continue to sign players with the right character.

Boss Steve Bruce will have his targets and Calderwood’s thoughts and opinions will be taken on board.

Having worked with a number of high-profile players in both the Premier League and Championship in recent years, the Scot will also have his own ideas on what is needed to improve the squad.

So who could he recommend to his new club for either January or next summer?

Beram Kayal (Brighton)

The tough-tackling midfielder is currently out injured but due to return towards the end of the year. With his contract expiring in the summer, a move could be on the cards if Brighton want to cash-in and avoid the possibility of losing him for nothing at the end of the season.

Calderwood will know all about his qualities and whether h’d be a good fit at Villa. Bruce is thought to be keen.

Brighton and Hove Albion's Biram Kayal (right) and Birmingham City's Stephen Gleeson

Dale Stephens (Brighton)

Another Seagulls midfielder who is out of contract in the summer.

Burnley had SIX bids turned down for him over the summer including a late £7m offer on transfer deadline day.

When assessing the Brighton squad last week, Bruce singled out the 26-year-old as one of the best players in the Championship. That doesn’t mean he’s interested in signing him, of course, but a glowing reference from Calderwood could change his mind.

Dave Edwards of Wolverhampton Wanderers is fouled by Dale Stephens of Brighton & Hove Albion

Robert Snodgrass (Hull City)

The manager knows all about him from his time at the KCOM Stadium and so does Calderwood who worked closely with the Scot at Norwich.

If the talented 29-year-old was to move on there would be a host of other potential suitors and Villa would only stand a chance of getting him if they were back in the top-flight.]

Jordon Mutch (Crystal Palace)

Another midfielder who has been linked with Villa in recent times and one who Calderwood knows well from his time at Birmingham City.

Mutch broke through at Blues and showcased his skills in the Championship by adding goals and assists to his game. Currently out of the picture at Palace and could be on the move in January.

I honestly believe that the right Midfielder will light the touch paper for our forwards

A busy dominant type who carries the game to the opposition......a driving force in the middle, who could relieve the forwards of a bit of defensive work.

What we need is a CM who can see a forward pass (a la Sid) and one who can drive through the center of the field (a la Mortimer) That would scare the shit out of every opposing defence and get them scarpering back running scared allowing Kodjia Ayew & Adomah to cause some serious chaos.

Yep and yep.

I don't think many would argue that strengthening the midfield should not be a priority for us. I think we could look to multi-task by bringing in a right back, a forward as well as a couple of midfield players as a minimum early in the window on loan or permanent deals.

Dale Stephens already plays for us doesn't he?

I hear his legs are shot after the first time he tried to escape from that hotel room we had him locked up in.

I thought the reason why we pulled out of the Hernandez deal was because of his wage demands, not because we couldn't agree a fee with Hull.

Pretty sure the Dr confirmed this at the time too.

I'd happily swap Rudy for Hernandez, no idea why Hull would do that though.

Me neither but as I alluded to I can't see what would change this time around when the contract was to be negotiated.

Unless he has one of those humble agents.....

I'd be happy in January to bring in a high energy midfielder and a competent right back on loan until the end of the season. Anything more than this would be a bonus.  Loftus-Cheek or Chalobah for the midfield.  Trippier, Jenkinson or Debuchy for right back.  I would bite the hand off Hull though if they were prepared to swap Gestede for Hernandez.
