Davkaus
I posted my curved ultra wide 50" monitor on here when I got it last year, it's basically 3 screens in one. Going back to the office occasionally and working from a laptop and 23" monitor is horrendous, I get nothing done

I'm struggling to reconcile these posts. I 'literally have 3 or 4 cans on a Friday night' (and Saturday night too ) and while it might not be as healthy as just quitting drinking, I am not at all 'one step away from being a full blown alcoholic'. Lots of people have a small-to-moderate amount to drink at the weekend, that's nothing special at all, but you were clearly worried about something much more significant than that last night.

It seems like there’s an unhealthy relationship with alcohol. Edited October 21, 2021 by Genie

So I click this thing in a hurry, put in my details and it takes me to a page from my company essentially saying "HA HA!! WE FOOLED YOU, THIS WASN'T REAL AND YOU COULDA GOT HACKED BRO!!! foreveryoung
'Friends' the American sitcom. It was rubbish, an how, if watched, you could ever watch again on the endless repeats is beyond me. An if you wanna get detailed, how the hell could they ever afford to rent, which was probably a million pound apartment in New York with the half jobs they had. I believe it ended because they were so far up there own arses, they all wanted a huge pay rises when they were already earning an obscene amount of money per episode. But apparently, it was the best time of there lives, I bet it was!!

Didn't Ross and Monica's aunt leave them the apartment? The Chandler is well paid for whatever he does (running joke) and Ross is a respected Dino guy at a college and rents that place across the way.
Popular Post Mark Albrighton Posted October 21, 2021 VT Supporter Popular Post Share Posted October 21, 2021 It was Monica (and Ross’) Grandmother’s apartment. And she would sublet it. Plus the living room/kitchen area of the apartment only occasionally had a fourth wall when viewed from the balcony. This structural arrangement would naturally keep the value of most properties down, especially when the apartment next door would often house an excitable audience. 2
Davkaus
They earned an obscene amount from it, but if it didn't go to the main cast, it was going to the bigwigs, so I don't begrudge them a cent

HanoiVillan
In the show, Monica is paying $200/month for the apartment, because the rent was stablised when her grandmother was living there in the 1940s. Today, a similarly sized apartment in a similar location would be rented for somewhere between $4000 and $6000/month apparently. (While this explanation may be somewhat plausible, it's not clear how they could afford to live in New York doing mostly part time or menial work. Only Ross (who never lived in the main apartment) and Chandler actually had full time professional jobs for most of the series)

(While this explanation may be somewhat plausible, it's not clear how they could afford to live in New York doing mostly part time or menial work. Only Ross (who never lived in the main apartment) and Chandler actually had full time professional jobs for most of the series) There are 2 laws about rent in NYC. Rent controlled is very different from rent stabilized. Rent control is virtually done as no new apartments have been added for years or will be. I believe the lease has to have originated sometime in the 1970's and yes, the rent is very far below market value. Just like in Friends, the apartment can be "passed on" however the recipient must be on the lease before the original leasee leaves or dies. For example, you rent an apartment which is rent controlled and then have a child. You put the name of the child on the lease when you renew (every 12 or 24 months.) The landlord has to accept this and if the apartment is rent controlled the landlord cannot raise the rent unless they do major renovation and even then it still has a cap based on the original lease and the income of the tenant. Over the last 50 years this law has been challenged again and again. The Monica situation in Friends is plausible but a little far-fetched. The idea that you can live there for 20 years and then "leave" it to a younger family member is not possible. I had friends in Manhattan who had been in their apartments for 30, 40 and on my floor in my 1st building there was an old lesbian who had been there 50 years! But I also know awful stories of children who have been thrown out of their family homes because they didn't understand the law and weren't on the lease. Landlords have become fairly clever and evil about getting tenants out of rent controlled apartments. There have been loads of legal challenges and sadly the system no longer exists. I had friends in rent controlled units and landlords would set up cameras to try and prove that they didn't actually live there full time. Friends had to spend $1000's in legal fees to fight landlords trying to evict them. There are lots of horrible stories. Construction work starting at midnight, hot water and heat being turned off (you will be amazed to find that the Trump company & the Kushner real estate companies has been accused of these kinds of tactics multiple times.) It can get nasty because there is so much money at stake for the landlords they will do anything. Rent stabilized is the other system. Essentially a local government committee get together every year and decide how much landlords can raise rents without any improvements. Usually somewhere between 2-5%. I lived in an apartment like this for many years. My rent started at $2150 per month, by the time I left 8 years later it was $2600 per month. 3
bickster Posted October 22, 2021 Moderator Share Posted October 22, 2021 Having to wear a shirt and tie to work today because I've got a ten minute meeting in the city centre to explain to two hotel managers how freephones work. Hate wearing a shirt and tie Bonus though, the meeting is yards from Probe Records and this opportunity will not be missed, though my appearance midweek in a shirt and tie WILL be mocked, it's only happened once before when I was summoned to court at short notice and the piss was mercilessly ripped. It wouldnt be Probe if this didn't happen though

I am not an apologist for the show, I was a fan and it's a very very white show. That said at the time you could pick almost any mainstream sitcom on any of the major networks and the same accusation could be levelled. Seinfeld, King of Queens, Will and Grace, Frasier, 3rd Rock. Over time things changed but Friends shouldn't be singled out when it was basically just white America having issues.

Friends is fantastic tbh - I don’t “watch it” anymore, but if I’m having tea in front of the telly, I’d absolutely happily shove Friends on. You’re completely right with the lack of diversity. It also has a LOT of jokes that just couldn’t be made anymore - most with sexist connotations. That’s all a sign of the times, though.

Pretty much all of them have their characters living in nicer houses and a better lifestyle than is realistic.
