The Film Thread

It's been so long since I've seen them but Lost World and the third one of the original were fine I thought, if clearly not as good as the original. I've watched the new ones and will watch this one too as, cineworld card etc might as well, but they are very forgettable and sanitised down for the PG/12A world. A bit more genuine terror needed. See also Meg, a potential classic Jaws-like film and it's basically bloodless. A waste. I mean I loathe needless torture porn type violence, but if you're going to have mental monsters there's got to be an element of the viscera about it.

Just seen Jurassic World Dominion, my review

Spoiler

It was ok! overplayed/focused on the story line, not enough dinosaur action for me.  Storyline had the potential to be good but wasn’t quite on the mark.  I love the Jurassic Park Universe, this rated in the middle of all those films.  I expected more overall, a little disappointed it wasn’t much better but it was an ok film just not the classic I was hoping for.  It has become more a focus on Chris Pratt than the dinosaurs unfortunately.

9/10, it’s gloriously cheesy. The best worst film (in my opinion).

its a guilty pleasure film that i always end up watching when its on

the actress playing the daughter is 45 years old now !!

from memory the first one is the only one that didn't overplay inventing the drama, I'm sure they could actually make the film work without the IT security guy stealing the DNA (spoiler!!!) just the storm hitting the island would be enough to make shit go wrong

every film since then has had new dinosaurs, magic dinosaurs, trained dinosaurs, increasingly convoluted reasons as to why shit has gone wrong

the new film has dinos integrated in to daily normal life, that's it, that's your film...unfortunately it also looks like it has Chris Pratt on some mission to help the baby of the velociraptor that he's mates with (that's not a spoiler that's a guess)

the below is based on a couple of tidbits ive read plus the trailers/tv spots...it's not mega spoilery

Spoiler

that SHOULD be your film. but from what i understand, it's not the film. the whole "dinosaurs live among us" thing is apparently confined to a small 5 minute montage at the start. i think that's one of the criticisms that people have with the new film. it's a big missed opportunity to have all manner of shit go down with dinosaurs living alongside us, but it seems that they've all been rounded up and confined to a single place. oh and they've chucked in a load of new dinos we've not seen before that add zero to the story and that we see for only a minute or 2, presumably because it gives them an excuse to release some new Mattel toys

from what i understand, set expectations low, and just try and enjoy it and not take it too seriously...apparently if you do that, it's quite a fun ride. i'm booked in for 2pm tomorrow

Need to brush up on my reading - I've changed it to what I thought I read.

Are either of them realistic?

The first one is probably more realistic to be honest :D

There's been one good Jurassic Park film, and it was the first one.

Both Jurassic World films have been shite so I'm not surprised this one follows suit

The first one is the one great film, yeah. The second is possibly one of Spielberg’s worst films, although I like Pete Postlethwaite in it. The third is a silly popcorn film, disposable fun.

The new films…I’m quite indifferent to the charms of Chris Pratt. Don’t dislike him, just <shrugs shoulders>. Similarly Bryce Dallas Howard, I just find myself thinking “Ah, I guess they couldn’t get Jessica Chastain then.”

Despite that, I had assumed that both of the new films had been generally well received, so I wasn’t expecting to see the overwhelming amount of bad reviews for what they’ve presumably been building towards (a proper joint effort between the original and new cast).

So, just watched Malignant...

It is a parody/comedy, right?  Because if not, it's one of the worst things I've ever seen.  If so... it's up there with Evil Dead, Cabin In The Woods etc.  The "chair shot" in the final third (hell, just the entire final third) was absurdly hilarious.

At the very least, holy shit are the trailers for it some major bait-and-switch; made me think I was gonna be getting some Hereditary/Caveat/Possum-esque brooding slow burner, that notion was practically catapulted out of the window by the end of the first scene.

WTF?/10

I watched the original a couple of weeks back. That scene where the jeeps first get stuck and we first encounter the T Rex is absolutely brilliant. The build up of tension plus the pay off is incredible

I watched a "making of" at some point. I found it fascinating how they got the water in the cup to do the vibration thingy when the T-Rex is getting closer.

You place the cup of water on a table - then tie a double bass string to the legs of the table and pluck it. It made the water jump and swell in that way.

Other boring factoid while you're there, particularly for the muso's / audio nerds on VT.
I became friends with Tom Holman. Who's he? Well Tom worked for Lucasfilm in audio for a long time and did some experiments. So THX, stands for...... Tom Holmans experiment. He has invented multiple iterations of surround sound. We met at a conference in about 2002 when he was working on 10.2 sound.

He eventually left the Lucasfilm/Dreamworks world because like many of his friends who'd been there at or near the beginning they had got sick of it. It had become overly corporate and in particular there were lawyers helping to make decisions about tiny thing.

In JP - the lawyer hides in the toilet/portacabin and gets eaten by the T-Rex. At the company's 1st screening of Jurassic Park that moment got a standing ovation from the employees :D (Tom loves telling that story.)

Watched Hustle and thought it was very good. A film that has been done many times before but it did it very well. Adam Sandler was excellent in it in a more serious role. He is one of the most frustrating actors around I think. When he wants to, he can be brilliant, but so many of his "comedy" films are so god damn awful. It's a shame he bothers making them. If he made more films like Hustle, Uncut Gems, Reign Over Me and Funny People I'd have way more respect for him.

And his best role in Punch Drunk Love.

Very good movie. PTA gets a great performance out of Sandler.

Watched Top Gun in the cinema last night, after watching the original at home the night before. Was excellent!

also genuinely can’t remember the last time I went to the cinema before that since The Theory of Everything at the old Cornerhouse in Manchester.
