But - aside from the goals and assists he has managed these past three seasons - anytime I have seem him against us he has been a nuisance. Don't think workrate will be an issue. Non of our players outside Watkins he reached double figures in goals scored and we need goalscorers in the squad. Assured goals in the PL. Barnes gives you that, with a load of pace and clinical finishing. I think we need that as a trait in the squad. Pace, Strength and goals is what we need in our buys this summer. Popular Post useless Posted May 29, 2023 Popular Post Share Posted May 29, 2023 There used to be a idea about Darren Bent, that despite scoring lots of goals, the top teams didn't want him because having him in the team was like playing with ten men and was only of use if he happened to score and even then in games where he does score that wouldn't always compensate for the negatives that having a player of his type brings to the team, there's a very good reason why fox-in-the-box type strikers went out of fashion, Darren Bent is the extreme example, but applies to other similar players too, Ings was probably too much in that light for Emery's liking. The same thinking can be applied to players that play in other areas of the pitch, in fact for midfielders and wide attackers it's even more important that they have more to their game than just goals, playing with a striker that doesn't do much but score goals is one thing, but to do the same with other outfield players would be worse, we've had it to a degree previously with El Ghazi and Hourihane, both got plenty of goals and assists, but because their general play was pretty average it meant that performances and results could be improved by bringing players that might not score or assist as much but would give much better overall individual performances. And I'm not saying that Barnes does nothing but score goals, just we shouldn't be thinking he'd be a good signing based just on the fact that he does, because he could come to us and score goals but that wouldn't necessarily improve the team's overall performance and results. If you took McGinn out of our team and replaced him with Hourihane, Hourihane would probably get more goals and assists, but our performances and results would be worse, and no offence to Hourihane as was a very good signing for us. The club and it's recruitment team will know all this crap of course and if we were to buy Barnes it will because they think he can contribute to overall team performances. It's been reported on by three fairly reliable people in Collomosse, Maher (good track record with Villa stuff) and Delaney (not even really a transfer guy, seems to only post about them when he has something legitimate) so it's safe to assume there's at least an interest there even if people aren't thrilled by the idea of it. Seriously though I think Newcastle would take him as they don't have a huge squad, he's better than Anthony Gordon and Jacob Murphy for example, but after that who's taking him? Are any of the sky 6 taking him? Chances of us getting a high-end CL player is pretty unlikely, no? But if we can, then great! As for Barnes, I don't think any of the "Sky 6" would sign him, no. I also think that's partly down to him not being a fancy enough name (which is part of what people don't like on here, too IMO).
