I don't quite understand this. We have been spending approximately 100m each summer for the past couple of years. Although we have spent similar this window it is covered by player sales. So is it really out of the question to spend 50m net spend on one player?! We have the money and don't need to strengthen a multitude of areas, so why not focus on one or two premium players.

It's highly unlikely we will be spending £100m each summer, the past 2 years are an anomaly because we had to build a team from scratch.

The big 6 have enough revenue to spend £50m on each player they buy, but how many individual players have been bought for £50m from the other 14 teams?

Yes, we could conceivably spend £50m on one player, but every window we seem to need more than just 1 player, so it becomes unlikely.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before but... If we want to be perceived as a big club with big club aspirations we need to be making statement signings like JWP. £50 million signings need to become a business as usual thing for us.

When we're at that level better players and, more importantly, better sponsors will want to be part of the project.

We need more statement signings confident they'll contribute from their first game and, over time, fewer signings with potential.

We certainly do want to be seen as big club with big aspirations but we don’t want to be seen as a club with a big bank balance so teams think they can bung an extra 10-15 million on their players price knowing we will pay it. Thankfully our owners are not daft and won’t be caught out, but inflated prices are a potential problem in the future that we might have to deal with.

OT - rumour seems to be we offered £15m for Lampard and Kanoute  , no idea what Kanoute's value was at that time though  , but West Ham rejected the bid

Yes I've heard that. I also heard that HDE had still been haggling over the price with West Ham at the time that Chelsea's bid was accepted, having offered £7.5m a fortnight earlier.  It's all water under the bridge now, but if Gregory had been allowed to offer an acceptable amount from the start, we just might have done a deal.

Didn’t ‘he’ buy Nakamba?

Yep, fair point. Has hardly played him though. Maybe expected him to be better on the ball...just speculating really. Also, could have been his foray into CDM territory and now he is reverting to type. Again, pure guess work.
