Dean Smith spells out Aston Villa's summer transfer plan

"We wanted a British feel about us but that’s not to say we will turn our noses up at good deals abroad," Smith said.

“We expect player recruitment to be harder because of Brexit so young, British talent is what we’re looking for.

“I believe that can improve us and we believe we can improve those players as well.

Could be viewed two ways: '' Boring '', or as a signal that we are now prepared to spend good money on the best British talent, instead of taking chances abroad?

Ready made for the Premier League, less settling time etc.

For years the talent in this country has been lagging behind Europe but that is starting to change now.  One look at the England squad and the players who don’t even get a look in shows how much quality there now is.  It’s about time!

Depay was koemans number target at barca so even if they don't sign him you'd have to guess he has lofty ambitions

Jovic has a 6 year deal with real Madrid, signed in 2019

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but transfermarkt thinks you are:

Does this not mean his contract at Frankfurt expires this summer meaning his loan? He returns to Madrid to his normal contract?

Interesting stuff, you reckon Plea might be a better fit for us as he's another who got the odd cap for France a while back and generally good scoring record for Nice and 'Gladbach, generally 1 in 3 scoring record.

A similar story, though he's fallen off an even bigger cliff.  At times he's looked worse than Breel Embolo, which is quite an achievement.  If I was cherry-picking 'Gladbach players, I wouldn't be looking much beyond Neuhaus, that'd be a statement signing and he'd saunter into our midfield.

Absolutely fine by me to be targeting players of the Watkins, Cash etc. ilk.

Hungry to produce and will always likely as a minimum retain the transfer fee paid.

I agree with the ideal that we build a base of primarily British players and bring a few high quality foreign players to compliment that.

However we do pretty much have that. A British back 4, Mcginn and Ramsey in midfield, Jack and Watkins up front. Actually for midfield is where England's Talent is slighty lacking and thus the hardest area to recruit British talent. Outside the top clubs you have Rice, Phillips, and JWP, all would only really leave for champions league clubs. Who is there outside of that.

The wings however there is Lookman and Brooks who are both very attainable. Get them both in!

Left back there is  not one I can think of.

Did some reading up on Buchanan from Derby after seeing his name in here. Watched a couple of videos too (I know, I know), but he looks almost exactly what were after. Young, plenty of room for development, likes to get forward and will happily come in and play back up to Targett whilst continuing his development.

Young and British, I like the sound of. Among our best players now are young, British players we signed. Konsa, cash, Watkins. More signings of this ilk would be perfect.

I was skeptical of Olise at fist, but the more I see, the more I like..

Skill, touch, vision and weight of pass is phenomenal.

Dare I say, Grealish esque.

Defo one we should look to scoop up and blood in slowly IMO.

He has really come on this season, would absolutely love him here. I think he would be a great backup for when Jack is injured and could offer so much from the bench

People seem to want rid of Trezguet. However our best football this season has come with him in the team. He doesn't have the finishing quality that Traore and El-Ghazi have but it's what he does everywhere else that sets him apart from those two.

In the last match against Tottenham it was his movement and runs that saw us get into dangerous positions, the extra work he does relieves some of the defense responsibility that the no 10 has when we play a 4-2-3-1 his link up play is better than El-Ghazi's also. The injury to him plus getting covid has set his fitness back. But when Jack returns I'd put Barkley back in for a couple games, with Trezguet on the right and see what happens.

Trezguets pressing is also the best of our attacking players. For me he is the one I'd want to keep (out of the 3), because he is the only one that is in any way reliable.

I understand your thoughts, everyone loves Trez for his work rate, it doesn’t change the fact he just isn’t good enough in the medium term

And all that for a supposed 8m release clause..... yep.

said this before i dont believe the release clause to be true simply on the basis that he seems too good a prospect for someone not to have triggered it by now

you dont need to wait until the window opens to buy a player, you need to wait until the window opens before you can transfer their registration, we could buy olise this afternoon - see ziyech for chelsea, they bought mid Feb last year

why are people waiting rather than trying to get in there first? that doesn't make sense...unless there isn't a clause...

People are navie and think we can just fill the team with flair players, if we signed someone like Buendia or Brookes and played them as part of our midfield three we'd get overrun every game, hardly any other team plays with a 'no.10' as one of their midfield three, and if they do it's probably because their other two midfielders are specialist defensive midfielders.

Another thing that seems to have been lost of late is that there's a difference between an attacking midfielder and a 'no.10' the two aren't interchangable, as they have different jobs,  you can still play someone in midfield to take advantage of the space Grealish creates without that midfielder having to be a number ten.

I think in a 4-2-3-1 formation you should be looking for the 3 to all be at least creative players; both wingers and the number 10. It's the job of the two midfielders behind the number 10 to do the defensive work and link the play to the forward players, I personally think we need an upgrade in this role.

I don't think anyone is suggesting we buy Buendia or Brookes and play them in a defensive midfield or number 8 role.

The games we've looked best in this season have largely been games where we've played Barkley as a number 10. However with Grealish out it's shown Barkleys weakeness in the fact that he needs space created for him by others to prove effective. An upgrade in the number 10 role would be a flair/creative player who can perform to Barkleys level, take some of the pressure off Grealish and most importantly be effective even when Grealish misses games.

To be fair to Barkley I think he's more suited to the central midfield role than some of the names that have been proposed such as Buendia and Brooks, those two are good players but more suited to playing on the wing which I'm certain is where they'd play if we were to sign either one of them. Olise is an interesting one, watching him recently and he has a much better all round game than I was expecting, he looks like he could play as part of midfield three.

I don't want back up to targett I want stiff competition from a pacy player.
