Frédéric Guilbert

I think people need to remember that he was bought at a time when by far the most likely outcome was us remaining in the Championship, and that he was bought explicitly as someone who would be able to 'do a job' either in the Championship or a PL relegation battle. It's not a surprise - and not his *fault* either - that that's pretty much his level, but I don't get why people are so puzzled that a side that finished mid-table in the PL last season and is trying to be upwardly-mobile would not feel the need of the guy's services.

Ability wise you're right. However, an injury to Cash and we're not exactly in a good spot. I know that Young can cover there but he can't cover everywhere.

I really do not understand why the club has acted the way it has with Fred. I trust them obviously and he has not been treated badly, but it is curious.

Odd and a big waste of money.

he cost less than 3m i believe. not really a big waste of money

all signs are pointing to him pissing off the manager in some way. he looks delighted to be back at strasbourg, it seems like he was really unhappy here

Ok. And if Cash is injured/suspended/unwell/whatever, his backup is..................................

Yeah, we're light on specialists in the position, but I think the reality is that Smith would have always started first Konsa and then Tuanzebe at right back instead of Guilbert, so in practice he was more like a 3rd or 4th choice.

I'd have kept Guilbert, personally, as I think he's looked alright.  He's clearly not in the managers' plans for whatever reason, though, and my gut feeling (as I've said before) is that Tuanzebe has been brought in as flexible cover (RB/CB/DM).  I think the club will have been trying to get Guilbert out the door.

He was a Steve Bruce signing.

We signed him but he remained on loan at Caén for the season.

By the time he arrived at Villa Park, Bruce had been sacked and Smith was manager, in which I don't think he ever rated Guillbert from the off anyway.

Nothing more to it imo.

Yeah, he wasn't a Bruce signing, but he was a Smith-buying-for-another-season-in-the-Championship signing. We've since largely dismantled that team, though Smith does make it clear when he actually rates players who played in that league (eg Mings, McGinn, Tuanzebe).

I don't rate him. The manager doesn't rate him. He has somehow achieved cult status at Villa despite doing nothing except be a liability almost every time he is on the pitch.

Regardless of that, this faux outrage at "the way he has been treated" is by far the most bizarre aspect of this whole saga. It's a shame we weren't able to flog him so people could get on with their lives rather than worrying about this painfully average millionaire footballer who our manager simply doesn't rate.

I wish him all the best though, obviously. Honest.

I rate him, Dean doesn't which is fair enough thats football its about opinions.

The outrage is just people again looking for a dig at somebody, who is usually Dean Smith

Maybe we can recall Kesler in January if needed

Young has played as many games in RB as he has LB. Konsa and Tuanzebe have played ~20% of their games at RB.

So if Cash and Targett were injured we'd have a back 4 of Young, Mings, Konsa, Tuanzebe - seems fine to me that back 4.

Kessler can be recalled in Jan if we need to, Guilbert too potentially.

Huh? We signed him in Jan after Bruce's departure didn't we? Maybe you know more and Bruce had him lined up before he left but I'm pretty sure he was signed under Smith.

My mistake.

I thought he was signed earlier than that.  🤦‍♂️

Has he been a bit of a knobby behind the scenes or something? Does he smoke in the toilets during half time?

We've had a few examples of DS and co not liking players because of attitude problems: players mysteriously going missing despite being fit. When not on loan, Fred could be found in the same place that Kodj and Engels visited.

Now Grealish is gone (whose off the field antics were largely ignored due to his on-pitch abilities), I expect we'll see an even stronger line with this sort of thing.

I'll miss Fred's sliding tackles* and his bombing on. Good luck to him.

*Only made because he was out of position in the first place
