Transfer Speculation January 2016

Us signing Vidic would be basically the same as QPR signing Ferdinand. Great, world class players in their day, now old and past it and probably with a choice of retire now or grab an extra 6 months of £100k a week then retire. Big name to calm the fanbase a bit until we realise be hasn't got it anymore.

I'd love to be wrong, Vidic in his prime was immense, I just see too many parallels

What are the parallels though?

That they're both old? Rio was a couple of years older than Vidic when he signed for QPR. That's a lot at that age.

I don't really see any parallels. Plenty of older players go to clubs and can still do a job. Some don't.

I don't think you can conclude that Vidic wouldn't work out just because Rio didn't work out. I could quite easily point to Cambiasso going to Leicester at the age of 34 and doing very well for them.

That they're both old former Man Utd central defenders who were immense and part of a brilliant Man Utd team who were ultimately released/sold as they got to their sell by date before (possibly) transferring to a team destined for relegation in what is likely to be their final destination before retirement

IIRC Vidic lost his legs in his final season for Utd and made a lot of mistakes that year leading to him being dropped then sold, it's now a couple of years later and I can't imagine he's got them back now.

Again, I haven't seen him play for a long time and if we sign him I'd love to be wrong, I just don't think he'd be an improvement on Lescott and they couldn't play together as even in their primes they weren't quick

1. Of course that's ultimately his fault. What I meant is he's not actuvely stopping us signing anyone this window. The whole mess is his fault.

2. I don't think that would mean we wouldn't sign anyone, just that the budget is different. I think our lack of signigns is due to us being bottom of the league and cut adrift.

Yes that's ultimately lerner's fault, but I inferred from Sean's post that he meant lerner was sat there telling us we couldn't sign anyone, when I don't imagine he's had any input into the decision this time around except for budget.

No Steve that wasn't my meaning, I don't think Lerner is actively saying no signings but he controls the finances and so far all we have is a few rumours about a keeper.

This team needs strengthen with good player's which will cost money that he is seemingly unwilling to sanction.

Randy Lerner is possibly the worst thing to ever happen to Aston Villa imo.

What are the parallels?  Well, Ferdinand had an injury history (bad back) when he went to QPR.  Vidic has had knee problems since he missed most of the 2011/12 season after doing his ligaments.  He was out again for months in 2012/13 with the knee, in and out of the team in 2013/14 then he signed for Inter.  He was terrible in his first season in Italy to the point where people were laughing at him and he's not played at all this season. He's not played international football since 2011.

He's not going to arrive here match fit and he's unlikely to stay fit for any length of time if the evidence of the previous four years is anything to go by.  Vidic is now a guy who is hoping to trade on his reputation because that's all he has left. It goes without saying he was fantastic during his peak years but those days are long gone.   Inter have released him from his contract because they believe he has nothing left to offer. He's too slow for Serie A so let's not pay him to sit on the bench and watch us get relegated or get torn to bits by a league he's incapable of performing in any more.

See I dont agree with that.  The signings made in the summer are the only green shoots we have.

The real damage has been the criminal under investment the 4 previous years, only Bentekes discovery covered this over.

When I say the 'real damage'. I'm not necessarily referring to the players we signed, but the players we didn't sign.

We signed a couple of decent players, I agree, we just needed more.
As I've mentioned previously, we finished 17th last season and lost our three best players. Realistically you then need to replace these 3 players (1 of which was a world class striker) with 3 players of equal quality, another couple just to stand still and then another couple to improve on 17th.

We came out of the summer having replaced Benteke with Gestede and a net spend of £0.
The money we have spent was spent on players who were always going to take time to settle, (Veretout, Ayew, Gana) by which point, the likely hood is we would be seriously low on points. Look where we are....

How can anyone at the club not have seen this coming? It was criminal mismanagement from everyone on the board and these people need to be held accountable. From Lerner to Fox, from Almstadt to Reilly. We don't have any football men on the board and I'm afraid this is reflected by the measly 12 points we have accumulated so far.

I'm angry just typing this.

It's a f****** disgrace.

What sort of midfielder is he?

It's hard to tell, the Scottish championship is so shit when you play for Celtic you can really do what you want however I would say he is a box to box midfielder

Judging by the comments so far, I'd say he's a crap one?

Been poor this year but looked good last year, well as good as you can look for Celtic in a league without a competetive Rangers

Remember Petrov came from Celtic. He was great up there but took quite a while to settle in the PL. The Scottish Premiership is a p*ss poor standard by comparison with Celtic being the only horse in a one horse race.
