Aston Villa: Dr Tony Xia set to axe Paddy Riley when takeover deal is confirmed

Chinese billionaire Xia has big plans for Aston Villa, and they won't include the current director of recruitment and scouting

Paddy Riley is expected to be axed by Aston Villa’s owner-in-waiting Dr Tony Xia if his takeover plans are approved, the Birmingham Mail understands.

The claret and blues’ talent-spotter will be moved aside by the Chinese businessman with a sporting director likely to replace him.

Xia and his team of advisors have discussed a future without Riley at the forefront of recruitment and scouting but they need the Premier League and Football League to ratify the proposed buy-out before pressing ahead with changes.

At present, departing chairman Steve Hollis is making the decisions on the behalf of Xia, and will officially appoint a manager if a preferred candidate is selected before the £60m deal is completed.

Riley’s future was always likely to come under threat once Randy Lerner departed.

And after the fatal Premier League campaign, which saw a number of his recommended players fail to perform, Xia has already come to the conclusion that the ex-Liverpool man will not be involved in the new-look set-up

Since re-joining Villa from the Reds in November 2014, Riley has seen three managers, two CEO’s and the club’s first-ever sporting director all depart.

He has become a target for frustrated fans in recent times as he was heavily involved in a £55m spending spree last summer.

More than half of the 12 arrivals were specifically targeted by Riley, leaving Tim Sherwood, the manager at the time, furious at missing out on players he was desperate to recruit.

Former boss Remi Garde was also fuming after the January transfer window when he didn’t receive a single penny to strengthen a team that still had a chance of avoiding the drop.

Xia plans to change the set-up at Villa providing he passes the Owners and Directors’ Test.

He will call on deputy chairman Chris Samuelson and CEO Keith Wyness, both of whom also need to be approved, as the men to provide much-needed football experience.

Whether they decide to appoint a sporting director is not yet clear but they want to make the football department as strong as possible to give Villa the best chance of making an immediate return to the Premier League.

Xia has already admitted that he will let the manager get on with the task at hand and will not interfere as he knows the importance of getting out of the Championship at the first attempt.

Yep all of them fox, Reilly, almstradt and Lerner all are for destroying my club. Funny your rolling your eyes when you have been a fierce critic all season as well. Glad they have all left our great club.

the only person left at the club that deserves credit is Hollis.

'Scumbag' is a very strong word to be fair.

He didn't assault a child, he was just not very good at his job. Let's keep things in a bit of perspective.

I'm one of the minority group that thinks he gets a bit too stick (well possibly, depending on circumstances). Some will disagree and it's hard to defend with how bad we were but the players we got in the summer aren't actually that bad and would look better amongst a new group of players. The big question is how much was down to him in relation to deciding what players we needed, and if he is thought we had been successful, because clearly we we missing 2-3 certain types players in the squad which we needed massively.

Surely his job was to recruit a team worthy of staying in the premier league? It's been a spectacularly depressing failure.

I don't buy this most of the players were actually OK really. The plainly weren't. With or without Richards and Lescott we were the third worst PL team ever. You don't get that just because of a couple of bad eggs,  the team from back to front left to right was totally dysfunctional under two different managers. Riley was responsible for this.  He was the main man. He put together a set of utterly atrocious / incompatible players making us a total shambles. It's almost impossible to see how anyone could have made a worse job of it.
