cyrusr Posted September 2, 2016 VT Supporter Share Posted September 2, 2016 (edited) Quote Responsible for contract negotiations last summer, Riley was the man to include the release clauses into the contracts of both Idrissa Gana, who left for £3m less than Villa signed him for, and academy graduate Ciaran Clark. From the Mail Article. Is this true, that Riley was responsible for the release clauses and contracts? Was never entirely sure what he did/didn't do but a clearly linked with the horrors of last season(s). Cheerio; don't let the door hit you on the way out! BOF Posted September 2, 2016 Moderator Share Posted September 2, 2016 You'd wonder how much influence, if any, that he had on the recent transfer window. If it was none, then why did he hang around for as long as he did? If it was some, then will that not have given him back some credibility. Either way, it's all a bit odd. TheStagMan
Well, with Xia tweeting that you cannot get away from mistakes of the past, sounds like this was coming for some time, just cant understand why he was kept on until now. Excellent that the last of the management link to last seasons disaster/comedy management committee is now gone.

I suspect he had zero influence, I think as has been stated Round was involved with transfers

He may have had a load of scouting information that we felt the need to keep hold of for the window. Now it's shut and the TD is in place he can bugger off. sidcow Posted September 2, 2016 VT Supporter Share Posted September 2, 2016 (edited) Signed Rudy Gestade when we had no wingers and no fullbacks capable of delivering any half decent crosses and no one who could take corners. After 2 skin of the teeth relegation escapes spent a huge wedge of transfer money on a young kid who was "one for the future" and given huge wages when we needed someone for right now. A deep thinker with a brilliant masterplan he was not. Edited September 2, 2016 by sidcow

OutByEaster? Posted December 27, 2016 Moderator Share Posted December 27, 2016 Just as a note, with Gueye increasingly looking like a £25-£30m player and us having rejected a bid of £25m for Amavi - is there a chance that this bloke knew what he was doing? Now admittedly, that's two out of the dozen or so we signed the summer before last, but those two would pay for the others.

I have never understood why he got so much stick, have asked the question multiple times. Our best players last season were players he had signed, he became a scapegoat for managers failing imo. However, I don't for one second think he was behind the Richards, Lescott signings, they were firmly Sherwood signings imo.

Now admittedly, that's two out of the dozen or so we signed the summer before last, but those two would pay for the others. The task wasn't to buy 2/3 decent players (if you want to include Ayew which I do so sod off) for approximately £9-10m each and a load of tat to go with them. It was to rebuild a squad. We purchased two absolutely dreadful central defenders, powderpuff midfielders in Veretout and Gil completely unsuited for the premier league and a man who only does a decent impression of a striker once in a blue moon. Oh, and Mark Bunn. And some other shit who's names escape me. And an athlete who is for all intents and purposes rubbish at football. Outside of Richards and Lescott, who were/are so bad they are both now retired, we purchased zero experience to work alongside these young talents. How much of that blame is his? Well. in retrospect as the man in charge of signing players, all of it. He did just enough to sort of make it look like he knew what he was doing, but ultimately he was a disaster. The record books prove it - 27 defeats, 27 goals, 76 conceded, 17 **** points. I'm just not ready for the suggestion that any of them knew what they were doing.
