I like violence in films when it's necessary. If a movie is about someone being murdered then I'm happy for it to be gruesome because that is what would happen.

BUt movies like Hostel which are just over the top gore for the sake of it don't do it for me

The first 10-15 minutes of Hostel are worth watching 😉

This may divide opinion.... something I don't get anymore.

Violence in movies and TV.

I used to watch anything and it would just wash over me. I wasn't squeamish in the slightest and I understood that any bloody gore was just make up and ketchup. I just didn't think about violence and it was just the "escape" of watching a tale that wasn't real. My wife however hates anything with violence and anger and once my so was born a few years ago I really didn't have time to watch much of anything on screen.

Recently I've started watching a bit more TV and film, and boy oh boy why is everything so violent? Squid Game? WTF? Why do we want to watch this? I want to understand modern cultural references but this is just violence and anger and awfulness. Fortunately, there's no violence in my life and I don't want there to be. So why are we choosing (as a collective) to experience viewing these things? Squid Game is an international hit - what are we trying to explore to want to watch this stuff? Do we need a war to feel human in some weird way? Can we not accept a peaceful existence?

Every show/movie seems to start with a death or a murder and it's become more and more graphic over the decades. The more twisted/weird the killing and death the more popular.

Have I become precious/sensitive/uptight or a prude? Having not engaged with much visual media for a few years and recently getting back into it, the impression is that most of the stuff we are watching as a whole is not pleasant, and arguably not very healthy.

Am I Mary Whitehouse suddenly? I want my kids world to be safe and healthy not filled with neurosis and dark murderous fantasies. The Purge??? 'kin 'ell!

I've kind of gone a bit that way too.  I think it's age. I've become much more mellow and that's part of it. I used to scour the darkest reaches of the early net for all sorts of depravity. Decapitations didn't bother me. Horrendous road accidents and whatever rotten.com or ogrish.com could throw at me.  Now I skip over videos on reddit if I think someone's gonna get hurt, as 'I don't need to see that'. I've also developed huge empathy over the years that I'm pretty sure wasn't there as a teenager or even my twenties.  And as I've talked to people about the latter, the common response has been that that's perfectly normal. I can still watch it, and I enjoyed Squid Game. But yeah I'm definitely not the man I used to was.

EDIT : I'm not a parent (that I know of).

I've had this conversation a fair few times with pals of mine. The most oft cited tipping point for them was becoming a parent. Suddenly your entire life is viewed through a different lens. It's no longer that your primary focus is yourself but how the things around you impact your kids.

I've not got kids but then again I've never been a big fan of violence or gore.

The random posts you see on twitter in response to something about a player/club from rival fans, the ones that list out stupid lists like the below and say 'X' isn't even on my list...

What a stupid waste of a person's time typing all that out for something nobody cares about. It's not even a good burn.

As one of the replies says, how depressing this is what will be all over anything we post now.

Some people's obsession with big powerful dogs. That horrible story in Wales where a 10yo lad was mauled to death by an American Pitbull, purchased off Gumtree where it was described as a beast. The woman who purchased it had a kid (not the lad who sadly died)

This is the actual dog, which weighed 8 stone

I'll never understand why you would want a dog like that, especially when you have children. There sadly seems to be certain type of women who are obsessed with owning a big powerful dog.

I like dogs... but not ones who could rip me to pieces if it so wished.

They all say the same thing, it’s not the breed, it’s how they are raised.
Bullshit.

Yeah, it's like saying guns don't kill people, people kill people.

Yeah but the presence of the killing machine sure does help.

 rotten.com ... ogrish.com

Blimey what a blast from the past.

Bangedup.com used to be my go-to for graphic porn and violence.

In fact I used to send out a weekly email to a lot of people on this site containing my picks of the week

Why the larger an animal is, the slower it's heartbeat usually is. For instance a mouse heart beats at approx 600-700 times a minute, a human heart about 70 to 80 bpm, an elephant at 30 bpm and a blue whale at 2 bpm.

I get that the heart is bigger so can pump more liquid in one pump, but the body will also be bigger so shouldn't that balance it out?

Guessing it's something to do with properties of liquid within vessels, but still don't get why the increased body size element doesn't counter that.
