Things You Don't "Get"

Everyone changes*. People aren't fixed objects, which is partly why I find the idea of a lifelong marriage so odd.

*Aside from those hardwired character traits that can be difficult to shake off.

was at my Nan's funeral yesterday (91 not a bad innings )   ..I wrote something for the service and she basically met my Grandad in 1940 , married him in 1941 and stayed married to him for 59 years until he died

they were happy and didn't feel the need to look anywhere else .....  I find that notion quite refreshing to be honest , they did things together and did things without each other and were happy with that

I've been married 13 years now , I'll be quite happy with another 46 years with Mrs H ... whether she'll feel the same way is an entirely different question :)

People with a gym obsession. Well done, you now look like a word removed with a pinhead on huge shoulders, and can now attract the kind of women that wouldn't have been interested in you if you hadn't spent £40 a month trying to look a particular way.

But aren't you attracted to women that look a particular way, i.e. attractive?

What about personality!

I wouldn't change myself in order to satisfy anyone

You should change, you're dead boring.

That's it, I'm off to the gym.

People change. People progress. There's no reason why 2 people can't progress together.

Well, that's not true is it? There are plenty of reasons, foremost among them being that you are separate entities and that you, at the end of it all, go through life alone. That is not to say you can not feel close to or intimate with someone, and that people in a relationship can not go through life together in such a way as to give the impression that you aren't alone.

But I'll stop there before the married/in a relationship crowd are riled up and come at me with pitchforks and all.

Be happy in the knowledge that your chemically induced state of love is at least some comfort in the despairingly blank void of it all.

That's the spirit

Or you could discuss the subject in a civil manner and at least try and see both sides of the argument , even if you don't agree

That is kinda the point of a discussion forum isn't it ?

I have seen no evidence of that in On Topic.

gambling/betting

Seriously? What's not to get?

Everything. Thanks to CED for reminding me of another of my "don't get"s.

No appeal for me whatsoever. If I've got a tenner I'd rather spend it on something I want rather than throw it away on the slim chance of getting a win.

I completely agree, I've no interest in gambling my money. Betting is very different though. Take poker for example, skills can be used to make yourself money. Same way as betting on sports.

But people who gamble, like the machines in bookies or people who play casino games. I'd never do any of that. I don't get gambling. I do get betting.

credit cards.

Seriously? What is the appeal of signing up to financial death traps? Can't afford something don't buy it and be more aware of your financial reality - if this irks you then mobilise for serious social structural change instead of lying to yourself.

Find it hard to feel sympathy for people who max out several credit cards. I guess for some it's a desperate means of staving off poverty but surely you're only going to make it worse :/ Can understanding borrowing for a house and if it's necessary a vehicle of modest costs. Everything else is just plain daft.

Credit cards are excellent tools. I never pay a penny, but always use them. They are insured which means they are better to use than cash or a debit card. Especially useful abroad.

Unless this is the point where you tell us you make £1m a year betting and never lose , I'd say you were gambling :)

I don't make £1mil a year!! It's impossible to get anywhere near that as bookies refuse to take bets. But I do make a healthy profit each year, was about £9,000 last racing season and nearly double that the season before due to an amazing Cheltenham festival

The Betting Advice section of my site is already heavily in profit from my tips. It's betting advice, not gambling advice  ;)

Woody Allen would be proud of that one.

Alpha double plus! :)

Id be very bored if I didn't gamble, I think I have done it every day for the last 10 years but in a form I don't really consider gambling even though most will disagree.

Blackjack, Slots, Roulette and most other casino games where the house has a huge edge Id say is gambling because you have zero chance of winning long term and each time you play you technically lose a percentage of whatever you bet.

Other areas like Poker, sports betting is a bit different, you can consider yourself to have an edge with all the information that is available to you. I did read a report a while back though that it's impossible to win betting on Premier League football due to the odds the bookies offer. There are some good value bets to be had though, (e.g Villa to lose is usually value  :( ). Would you say stock market trading is gambling? Its pretty similar, you take the information you have and make what you think is a profitable investment.
