Release clause of £100m. By some way a record fee for a club for a British player. We set the release clause at a value we didn't believe would be met. After a great season a number of clubs expressed interest in Jack. Below the clause. We rejected. Man City finally agreed to pay the fee. After many discussions with Jack, his family and Aston Villa, we made clear how much we wanted to keep him. He instructed us to accept the release clause. It was a very emotional moment when he made the decision and telling us he wanted to leave the club where he had been for 19 years. It boiled down to him wanting CL football now. We knew this moment may come and unfortunately it has. We could never replace Jack with one footballer. We broke this down into his key attributes - creativity, goals and assists. And so have signed 3 players in Buendia, Bailey and Ings which we believe complete this goal and reduce an over dependency on one player. There is real depth and quality in the squad. With these signings, the other signings we have made including the returning Ashley Young and a fantastic Academy and new additions. They truly are the future. Why not just leave then? Because Man U refused to budge on their 65 million and they were the only ones interested. Man U apparently had an agreement that if we were relegated they would sign him.
