Will be close to impossible for him to get into the team if Barkley, McGinn and Luiz are all fit.

But good luck to him.

There's something to be said for having someone around who can light a fire up their arses though, in case they ever start to think they're nailed on starters. We need to be at a point where nobody is ever guaranteed to start, ideally not even Jack.

But you know that's not true.

Smith has his favorites. There is no point denying it. Not saying that's necesarrily a bad thing, most coaches have it.

Hause played ever so well and we kept cleen sheets in Mings absence yet Mings came straight back into the team when available.

Tbf the availability of quality from the bench hasn't exactly screamed tactical sub advantage. Think with a stronger squad we might see more rotation in game to change the dynamic if needed.

Exactly. I see it as trusting the current XI to deliver, but understanding that the bench isn't quite where it needs to be in terms of overall depth. Pragmatic.

So not impossible then.

And you have no idea the level of competition he will bring to the midfield.

Anyone would think it's rocket science...

He mentioned it after the Chelsea game that we're about 3/4 windows away from having the squad we need.

The form of AEG , Hause,  has been welcome and helped in terms of depth. The question is if AEG Hause et Al can maintain it. Sanson is a signing that ups the ante. On the training field he is going to help raise the level.

The likes of Sanson and Barkley coming to us over other clubs is a great coup for us. In a season or two these signings will be the norm.

It's amazing how many can't see beyond the first eleven. We need equally good of not better than the starting 11 coming in. That's how you win things.

And that's how you show your best players progression so they do not leave in turn.

You have to have a bench which can make a difference

Tbf there ain't many midfielders i'd take over Luiz, McGinn and Barkley.

Finding equally as good players will be pretty damn hard, and expensive.

If this guy is better than McGinn and Barkley, then good! Makes them have to up their game to keep their place doesn't it.

I concur with Pissflaps.

Just dont see how you can make that judgement without seeing him play for us. Also, we are assembling a squad, not 'only' buying first team replacements with a view on a concentrated 11.

His stats compare more than favourably against McGinn AND very favourably Bruno Fernandes, and whilst I am not expecting that kind of impact, would expect him to lift the standard of the squad and increase competition - there is nothing wrong with having the option of bringing on someone of equal quality, or better and to rotate the squad and have an alternative to McGinn or Barkley. What about injuries and suspensions, or do we expect to field the same 11 all season and next when we hope to comepte in Cups and possibly Europe?

If we are now buying £18m substitutes it bodes very well for the future direction and intent of the club.
