Well at the age of 49 i have just learned that sky replay the full game the morning after . So i can sit down and see if it was a good debut for a 17 yr old or a crap one. Without seeing him i think we can all agree already that by the time he is 19 he should be absolutely fine as he has all the raw talent you could wish for

Completely agree

I thought there were some flashes of brilliance, and in possession he did well. What surprised me for a young kid was when he didn't have the ball or lost possession he looked a bit lazy.

Young players normally bring energy, but lack presence, I thought he had the reverse.

A good debut, and very promising player who I hope we see a lot more of in the bear future (for his progression he needs games at this level now).

Don't bother. He's a highly rated 17yr from our academy, people will see what they want to see. I felt the same with Ramsey's early performances. Actually, I think he looked nervier in this game than any of Ramsey's performances last season.e

People just judge these players on different standards, especially early on. I will say if someone like Hourihane or Mcginn put in that kind of performance, the reaction in his thread would've been a lot more negative.

That's not to say he doesn't have massive potential or that he didn't do well considering his age. But as a first team PL midfielder he still looks a ways off from where we would need him to be.

Yeh, exactly.

If you want to judge him as a 17yr old making their debut then he did well. All things considered.

But as a player in a PL match? He struggled.

Like we’ve said. Who cares, he’s 17. He’ll be great I’m sure.

People see that he's seventeen and think if he's that young and playing for the first team then he must be a wonderkid and so judge him against higher standards than necessary. Most seventeen year olds aren't even playing U23 football yet, they're still with the U18s, if you've got a seventeen year old playing for your first team and he puts in a good performance not looking out of place then that's a remarkable achievement for that player and a good sign for his future.

Also he was playing alongside one other specialist midfielder, playing in a two man midfield is a lot to ask of any premier league player nevermind a seventeen year old on his full debut, so I think that has to be taken into consideration as well, I'm sure if he was playing alongside say Luiz and McGinn, then you'd seem him do even better.

Will do this whole bunch of talent a world of good being around the likes of Ashley Young also. Shakespeare has already made comments on how Young has come in and taken them under his wing a bit, has set rules and stays onto the younger players to stay tidy etc. in the dressing room. Young has done it all pretty much, you have to respect him and his career which I am sure the younger lads will do of course.

Not just Carney of course, but I can't help but think we have a really good bunch of young players and they're in a great environment for us to get the best out of them and for them to get the best out of themselves. Love the culture of our club now and you can see why younger players are attracted to us with the pathway to the first team being very obviously there.

Well, if there's one trait World class players always have, it's " presence " not so much energy. So here's hoping.

Agreed with your points. Carney is not ready yet to start games in Premier League and make an impact. Off the bench cameos, yes.

Amazes me how well Bellingham is doing at the same age, already starring for Dortmund and playing for England. He must be one in generation talent.

I'd say this was at least 2 months before he would have had his first Prem start if it wasn't for the midfield crisis

He was picked ahead of Nakamba and Hourihane who could have both started, that was Smith's decision and shows the regard he is held in.

I suspect we'll see him get quite a few more minutes before October 20th as well. There's a lot of interest in the lad, and he's staying here because of a path into the first team, so we're going to have to show him it's real.

I'd like him to start infront of Luiz and beside McGinn. We can't judge him properly as he's mostly offensive player. You'd like to see what can he do at this level. Not that Young done badly but you'd like to see him with proper CM's.

In a similar age  (probably couple of months older), we were depending on Jack Grealish contributions helping us reaching FA Cup final + keeping us up after being almost relegated before him being introduced to the team.

As mad as it sounds Jack was 19 and a half when he played THAT game against Liverpool .

Been racking my brains to think of another player in the prem who plays centre mid at 17 years old. Someone will prove me wrong i am sure now but i couldnt think of one . Tends to be wingers full backs and strikers who play at a young age because of how strong and wise you need to be .
