That Robinson one was upgraded from yellow to red by VAR and that was for Liverpool who are supposed to get preferential treatment.  Anyway all McGinn had to do was trip him up and pick up a yellow, he has to face the consequences of doing it the way he did.

100% - he cocked up and I can't really see any sort of argument against a red here. It won't be rescinded and it's a waste of time appealing.

True.. if everyone else did it, we'd have been down to 0 players and the game would have defaulted to a 3-0 Spurs win and our GD would be better

I can't believe the mental gymnastics we are doing to claim 'it wasn't a red'.

It is the reddest or red cards. It's not accidental, he's not going for the ball, intent is to 'get into him'.

It's not badly timed, it's perfectly timed to break up spurs attack.

John did exactly what he wanted to do. And (other than the punishment) it was the right thing to do at the time. Break them up a little.

It's just a shame other players didn't have the fire in their bellies.

I said as much pages ago. Our setup had effectively sucked the life out of our team. John, as captain, took upon himself to reinject some fight into Villa. He was having a good go at it but messed up. It happens, people make mistakes.

The way people dissect players actions on the pitch is laughable. This is a game played at speed, with no defined stoppages. Multiple decisions must be made every second by the player. John got this one wrong but his intent was to spark our play, so for me no harm done.

A textbook cynical yellow card offence.

Nah, the leg kick is what does it for me. John typically goes for the shoulder or arse barge, which never gets a red.

But the leg sweep is old fashioned. I like it but to argue it’s not a red is through c and b glasses.

Yellow card is to pull his shirt.

We see a few of those every game.

Red card is to do what John did.

Clearly should be a yellow, clumsy but is going for the ball, that's where his determined face is focused and where his foot is aiming for, he's trying to put the ball out of play for a throw-in, to prevent an attack, even if he was purposely going for the man, which he was not, those tackles happen in every game, and the response is usually 'he took one for the team'.

I can’t believe we’re trying to justify a yellow card for this. The tiniest little kick out as a bit of petulance is given as a red card - this is a footballer absolutely hoofing another one. That’s gif is in slow motion and SJM’s kick is still at a decent speed.

If he just tripped Udogie then it’s a standard yellow, but that’s a horrific challenge and a deserved red.

As you can see from the gif, McGinn was going for the ball, and the biggest clue is that after he makes the tackle observe his eyeline, all he is focused on is the ball, if he was purposely trying to hurt the player, then after the tackle he would be looking at the player, but he wasn't, he didn't even have the player in his thoughts, if you use emotional intelligience you can see, h was going for the ball but made a bad job of it, so ended up accidently tripping up the unfortunate Spurs player

Also just because Villa fans would have wanted a red card had it been done to one of our players, that doesn't prove that it should have been a red card, many Villa fans always crying wolf, when it comes to refereeing decision, to the point now where their protestations fall on death ears

That's a funny way of saying kicking a player.

Lol.

He'd just gone into a couple of challenges down by the corner flag before flying into this one. Even from the Holte End in real time it looked bad. There is no accidental trip, and if you see the front view he went in very aggressively which isn't a problem if you actually win the ball, but he didn't. He swept the kids nearside leg away and was nowhere near the ball. IMO he lost his head due to frustration in that moment.

Unbelievable how people are trying to justify this. If had been one of our players there would have been absolute uproar in the ground and after.

I have no complaints on the McGinn Red Card. He went in strongly and at great speed and totally mis-timed it. If he hadn't applied such force to the tackle he probably would have been given a yellow card fo a cynical trip, as it was he cleaned Udogie out. He has let us down on this occasion as we are now down to bare bones in central midfield for the next three games, which is a large chunk of the remaining games this season. We have to hope that Tim or Tielemans can step up to fill the void, or that JJ is back and firing again asap.

Disagree, it’s pretty much the opposite of what you said.

Yet if that’s a slide tackle it’s just a yellow
