The Tim Sherwood Thread

Aside from Sherwoods rambling one of the things I find disturbing about that Daily Mail piece is that they state a press officer denied Sherwood the opportunity to answer questions surrounding our summer recruitment policy. Why would the press guy step in and not allow that? It suggests to me that there is conflict with in that area and that Sherwood perhaps wasn’t allowed to bring in the players he wanted. If there is nothing to hide then why stop questions being asked.

This whole saga is turning into a farce quite frankly. It also concerns me that if there is a committee that decides on which players to buy then you will get a lot of managers not willing to work in such circumstances. You can guarantee Allardyce wouldn’t have come in and I would have my doubts that Moyes would work under such a structure. These guys usually want total control and rightly so in my book as it is their necks on the block when things go wrong.

The issue over who signed the players will probably cost Sherwood his job more so than his current results and performances. There's no way back for Sherwood here after he's basically said the new players are all crap.

Riley and Halmstad will be desperate to get someone in who will prove them right - as will the players.

I think it's the right way to go but we've just gone about it with different cheap gambles again. We were a mess previously because we allowed completely different managers to bring in their own players which meant a total rebuild every time a new manager came in. I'm happy for the manager not to have total control.

it could just be that Tim's targets were beyond our budget.

Exactly. The idea that a manager can sign whoever he wants is nonsense. By default, every manager would like to be given the funds to sign the last Balon D'Or winner. Ultimately every club makes the decisions at board level, based on what they can afford and what they consider to be value for money. It has to be that way.

So why did he take the job if he knew about all this? Give over mate, the guy is taking us for a ride while dragging the club through the mud whilst he protects his own image.

Some quotes being tweeted (on phone, can't share) where he says the players from Ligue 1 are quality and the league is similar to the English league, so it will be easy for them to settle, from back in September. Followed by him saying the complete opposite this week.

This is the first Villa manager I can remember disliking. I honestly feel close to hating him.

Even as manager (before he started mouthing off) I found Lambert likeable. Sherwood just pisses me off.

No manager will get all his first choice players.

Any manager will have a scout - to check out potential players

Given the potential millions being spend, I would imagine members of the board will be involved in most big transfers.

To me that should acceptable to most managers - sure he will have to hold his own and there will be some debate - there is potential for a manager to be suggested players that he doesn't rate. all part of the job. However the media savvy sherwood has seized on this and its a smokescreen. Im not convinced the results would be much different had we signed Adeybayour, Townsend etc.

Things seem to be gathering a pace - I reckon Laudrup could be in the frame - he's like a better version of Sherwood - so could see the appeal to guys who thought sherwood was the answer.

For me you don't 'style' your way out of a relegation battle - Big Sam should have been given the job .......but what do I know...?

Give over? I am not defending him. You can’t defend the indefensible and the diabolical start we have had is indefensible. I agree if he knew what he was signing up to then he should never have taken the job if he wasn't happy with the structure he would be working under.

My concern isn't really with Sherwood though. My concern is with who comes in and replaces him and I am certain that there are managers that will not work under a structure where they don’t have control of which players you bring in. Managers like Allardyce want total control of the footballing side. I also imagine that Moyes would want to work that way. For me as I said previously if you don’t trust a manger to decide on which players to bring in then you shouldn't employ him.

The same debate was had at Albion - no decent manager would work under the structure they had. Yet they lured the bloke who won manager of the year from the previous season.

I don't think a strong manager will have issues with structure - He will be strong enough to get his own way  (most of the time)

I don't think whats happening at villa is anything other than a network of scouts suggesting players to Sherwood......

If we're to replace Sherwood I think it needs to be continental manager, british/scottish/irish managers have imo shown that they cant cut it.

We need to try something new, not to do the same stale shit all over again, british managers are tactically too limited imo.

Like who??

Magath?

So in actual fact Fox has done a good job in implementing such a system?

At least that is my interpretation. As for "burying his head in the sand" you have no solid evidence for that whatsoever. Only that he hasn't done exactly what you personally want him to do, which seems to consist solely of hiring Pulis or Allardyce.

I feel that he acted as quickly as he was allowed to do so in removing Lambert. He acted quickly in hiring the man who kept us in the league last season. Quickly and efficiently built the backroom, quickly and efficiently signed the players we needed in the summer and the axe is about to fall on the man he himself bought in only 8 months ago.

You can look at some of those decisions as mistakes if you like, I certainly don't think Sam Allardyce is/was the only manager available to us capable of keeping us in the league, as neither was Tony Pulis. But mistakes, maybe. Burying his head in the sand though? Absolutely no chance. I don't buy that for a second.

Anyway, back to Sherwood. I hope this is the end of the road, but I accept that it's not as simple a process as we might like. I'm pragmatic even if the manager isn't (his words!).

Not sure David Moyes is the answer, won only 1 out of 8 games for Real Sociedad, we would end up hating him after a few months.  We need a new philosophy, someone who can get the players firing..I'd want a continental manager..if we go down this year at least lets go down with some fight and willingness to play some decent football.

Leicester last year always played some good stuff, even whilst they lingered at the bottom, they were just unlucky, hoping someone can do the same for us.

I would be happy with Moyes or Laudrup definitely. Don really want Rodgers. I think the best person is Moyes by a country mile. He knows this league inside out and I am not concerned about his performance in Spain.

All this new philosophy stuff is all well and good when we're in a position to implement it.

A third of the way through a season when we're 19th in the league is not the time.

The issue with the other stuff we don't have the players for it IMO, the best chance we have of getting out of this shit is playing a bit like Soton did with Pochettino.
