All these damn hard lefties lol. What are all you passing out Socialist Workers outside Villa Park on match days, or would that be too AUTHORITARIAN LEFT lol? But it's nice to see the left isn't dead in England. I wish it was more like that here, tbh. We have a real underclass of neo-fascists around, which is frightening. You remember Marx's lumpenproletariats? Well, picture right-wing versions of them. It's ****ed up.

It's not all bad news from the States. I do see a rise in grassroots organising, especially among women. To my mind, the grassroots and bolder leadership could really make difference. I don't feel quite as hopeless about the midterms as I did a couple months ago, but it's still a big lift.

Anyone going to be brave enough to post their authoritarian/right wing grid?

Seriously. Are there many people like that on Villa Talk? Honestly ignorant on this (and so much else). I guess I'd kind of wondered if anyone even a little over to the right gets pegged as a Hank Hill/Archie Bunker/Alf Garnett and finds themselves marginalized on the playground, but perhaps I"m not giving them or Villa Talk enough credit?

The site (Off Topic at least) is generally pretty left wing and can be a bit of an echo chamber but there's a few people that have posted the odd counter viewpoint (myself included as whilst I'm aware of the issues having grown up in North Devon I'm not completely against holiday/second homes and think they have some benefits) . It's not common though and generally gets a reaction.

The questions are ridiculous. I think it's impossible to come off as right wing on that without answering obviously leading questions which invite you to confess to being a sociopath.

I'm on the left side of things before anyone thinks I'm 'hiding!'

I agree, I know a fair few Villa fans that might drop slightly onto the right hand side of that grid and many that would be on the left side.  I agree the off topic is mainly left wing and an echo chamber on certain views as you pointed out one that I was on the wrong side of discussions according to many.

I think I might try the test, I guess I’m probably close to centre, maybe slightly left of it based on the conversations I’ve had in off topic over the years.

I think even the majority of British Conservative voters (maybe not the actual party membership) would score fairly central on these US-based surveys.  There is almost zero time spent debating stuff like abortion, church v state, guns, the death penalty and universal healthcare.

Our Tories that seem to be lurching further to the right than ever fall to the left of the US Democrats.  Emphatically on economic issues.  Scary.

Outside Left. Basically you don't like the Dems but you dislike the Republicans more.

It's like being told you have to eat a shit sandwich, but you do at least get to pick whose shit it is.

I mean, yeah. Not sure American Dems being to the right of Tories on certain economic issues is such a new thing, not since 1948 or so, but I can't speak to Tories much. But it's so, so much worse than all that, I'm afraid, in terms of comparisons. The left-right continuum, the meaningfulness of Take This Fun Quiz! charts, all the blandishments of a functional democracy that we take for granted are unfortunately on the table here in my other country since the threat of widespread political violence hangs in the air. We're at that point where we continue to trust our small-d democratic machinery, or we make choices that deny civil rights (in the interest of saving the country and protecting people) to an anti-democratic political minority that threatens the majority with violence or disenfranchisement. So far, I've supported the former course of action, but many others are losing faith and considering the latter. Kind of depressing, I know. But that's the bleak reality I'm seeing. 😟 I see something like Ukraine's Orange Revolution on the way in 2023. I hope not, but that seems very possible to me.
