(sorry struggling with posting the url as a link - it is on the BBC website)

Aston Villa's Brett Holman is "honoured" to have been named Australian footballer of the year by his country's football federation.

The 28-year old midfielder accepted the award via video link from the UK to a ceremony in Sydney.

He has made 13 appearances for Villa since joining from Dutch club AZ Alkmaar on a free transfer in June.

Previous winners

  • 2009 - Mark Schwarzer (Fulham)
  • 2010 - Mark Schwarzer (Fulham)
  • 2011 - Matt McKay (Rangers)

"It has been a long, hard road and a battle, but I've achieved some great things in 2012," said Holman.

"It's a great honour."

His award recognises his efforts with AZ Alkmaar at the end of last season, which helped them to secure fourth place in the Eredivisie.

Holman has made eight Premier League starts for Villa, picking up the club's player of the month for September following strong performances against West Bromwich Albion and Swansea.

Since making his international debut in 2006, he has won 53 caps for Australia, scoring eight goals.

Paul Lambert's Villa are currently in the Premier League relegation zone - on goal difference.

good result.... have seen him play for the socceroos often, and he is certainly a key player for them... if only we can get him confident attacking in the final third for us, he has a key role to play in our team....

puts the fizz back in to us when we need it....not sure if he's a 90 minuter though.

like his all action style, think he upsets the opposition, which makes him effective ( whatever your style essential to be effective)

we need a bit of quality added to midfield in Jan.

Doesn't have as much defensive disapline as KEH though. If you're going to play a defensive 2 which includes Bannan, then playing Holman as well will leave us really exposed. Both have good work rate, but both want to be getting forward and joining attacks, whereas KEH is much more happy to sit, make interceptions and tackles and move on the ball quickly to the more creative players. It's a position which gets very little appreciation 75% of the time, you get noticed for some key moments, but most of the role there involves off the ball play; tracking midfield runners and eliminating passing options, very rarely get noticed because the 'killer ball' isn't played, but you'd notice if the right person wasn't there - and I think with Bannan and Holman you would get that situation.

He's definitely the kind of player you need to bring on when you need to up the tempo. He could actually have won the game for us Saturday and against weaker, less organised defences he'll be a absolute menace. But, as already said, he is more of an impact sub than a ninety minute player atm.
