Also Gallagher really isn't that bad on the ball at all, not sure where this idea has come from that he isn't technically very good, he might not be a Xavi type, but he's more than decent enough, much better than McGinn in that regard for example. I think because he's an hardworking type with good workrate maybe that overshadows how good he is on the ball for some people, and hardworking types with good workrates tend to be midfielders that are like that to compensate for lack of natural ability, but having seen Gallagher for Swansea, West Brom, and Crystal Palace, that's really not the case with him.

Question for everyone. Who was the last player we signed who was or is better than all our other players?

This is the thing, we've stagnated.

Likes of Newcastle, west ham, Palace overtaking us.

Tough one as for a long time our best player was home grown.

Is he? Passing completion at various ranges is similar. xA, key passes, SCA (passes) all a similar range (McGinn marginally higher if anything). McGinn miscontrols and dispossed less for a similar number of touches.

Main positives for Gallagher seem to be higher workrate (eg. higher pressing figures) and shooting.

Having a homegrown world class player for a while possibly skews this somewhat.

But could argue Buendia, perhaps Coutinho on raw talent although the glimpses that the player of old is still there under the rust have all but stopped now.

If looking at their respective position, you could argue Carlos comes in as our best CB and Kamara our best midfielder - with the potential to be our best player in general.

I think our recruitment has largely been fine, our overall squad is much stronger than 2 years ago. There’s some areas than need strengthening and balancing work no doubt.

You mention Palace as one of the sides leaving us behind, performance-wise sure but that’s not hard under current management, whens the last time they bought a player better than Zaha? We have a much stronger squad and 11 on paper, the difference for me is a manager that has them functioning like a team with a clear gameplan where they all know what they are doing.

Don't forget Gallagher has the potential to attract young girls to VP now that Jack is gone

Doesn't seem to be much of a strategy to what we are doing.

Bit like opportunistic scavengers picking up the weak and unwanted from the clubs around us. A old lion with no teeth.

None of this matters until we have a manager that:

a. has an idea about how to set the team up

b. can coach players effectively to attack and defend as a unit

c. can improve the players we already have, and has an idea how to use them consistently so an understanding develops on the pitch

d. can prepare tactically for opponents, exploiting their weaknesses and covering their strengths

e. can avoid pissing off large chunks of the squad.

Villa now linked with Gerson from Marseille according to SSN. Plays centre mid or left mid. Scored 9 and assisted 7 from 35 games last season. 25 year old Brazilian. Lazy journalism on D-Day or possible to make it happen to pair up with old teammate Kamara?

If we really are back in for Sarr then there's something seriously wrong with the management of this football club. What a mess

If and it's a big if, perhaps Sarr hasn't been bowled over by the weight of offers he had anticipated and has dropped his wage demands for joining us. :detect:

When you’re in the relegation places and Premier League survival is critical (unlike say a Norwich or Fulham), strategy goes out the window.  We’d be in a much different place if we were mid-table right now.

We started off behind these two.
