Boris in Intensive Care

Life really is odd sometimes. A scholar, admirer and frequent reciter of Classical Greek literature, fervent admirer of Churchill and expecting a baby, only to be struck down by the very crisis he thought himself born to lead his country through. Instead he has the lead role in an epic tragedy.

You couldn’t make it up.

From the Guardian live updates page

It is understood Johnson was moved to the intensive care unit just short of an hour and a half ago.

The decision was made by his medical team after his condition worsened over the course of Monday. The prime minister is understood to be conscious and to have been moved as a precaution in case he needs ventilation.

It did look bad. Apparently the Guardian were told his condition was worse than the government were willing to let on.

They were clearly playing it down. Which is kind of understandable.

You don’t go into hospital for two days with coronavirus unless it’s serious. PM or no PM

Does this usually happen? I would’ve thought the situation would’ve been much more serious than just “precautionary” for him to go there.

I don't really believe they'd move him to ICU as a 'precaution' - even in the best of times that's not going to happen let alone when they are snowed under like this. ICU is for when you need 24 hour monitoring and are hooked up to all the top-end lifesaving machines, and the number of beds is strictly limited - at Good Hope there are what half a dozen? Even if you're PM they surely wouldn't give you a bed there unless it's critical.

They obviously try to downplay it in the media.  I've got a bad feeling about this but hope he pulls through, just like anyone else who has it.

Get ready boisssss, 1996 is coming back!

Woohoo!

It's like Scrooge coming to life.

Wish him a speedy recovery!

In a very similar vein, I meant to link this the other day which I thought was really interesting.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has long hailed the ancient Athenian statesman Pericles as one of his idols, but their careers are now aligning more closely than he would like in the age of the coronavirus.

Both men plunged into high-stakes geopolitical showdowns against an alliance of powerful neighboring states, only to be knocked off course by the onset of a deadly disease.
