Marvelous Nakamba

I agree with you. Hause cleared the ball with his weaker right foot, straight on to the head of a Spurs player who headed it back forwards, and (our) goal side of Nakamba, who had another Spurs player right next to him. He was faced with a ball at an awkward height going behind him with a man on. Ideally he'd have hooked it back up field, but it wasn't a howler caused just by him.

Quite often when a player messes up its also the team that contribute to it as well along with plain old misfortune. In this instance it didn't look look like he got a shout from a team mate about the spurs player steaming towards him and to just row z the ball. It was badly controlled but also a bit unlucky. He responded really well though.

I think we have to give Bergwijn a bit of credit here for such tenacity....SJM could have had an input too.....but it was so quick and in a dangerous place to concede a penalty.....Bergwijn did well and dispatched a wicked shot.

Ollie equally pounced well for us too, so you have to accept sometimes the offensive element of the encounter.

I thought Marvellous, threw off his set back well and went on to have a fine game....assist to boot.

Nakamba has a role. He’s not a brilliant footballer and he isn’t going to beat 4/5 players with some silky skills.

What he does do, is run around in front of that defence, trying to win the ball back and he’s very tenacious.

We need a better DM than MN, no doubt about that, but one of the reasons I prefer him to Luiz is many regards is he has that outstanding attribute - winning the ball back.
Luiz does a lot of things ok. Passing, dribbling, tackling, but is a master of none.

It’s a team game and when you have Nakamba in the side, there is an argument that we look more balanced as a result.

I may be on my own in thinking the mistake for the goal wasn't that bad... fair enough, he should have down better with his control,  but it was a harshly punished miscontrol given where he was when he picked it up.

Not saying it was Nakamba plan but we were dreadful in the 1st 10 minutes that conceding actually benefitted us and woke us up

I disagree, I think Luiz's touch, calmness under pressure, and weight of passing are pretty special. You don't catch Guardiola's attention without those attributes.

But I do think Marvellous has a role here, as he really does have a knack for winning the ball back in midfield. He's definitely our best midfield ball winner. He's also very good at looking innocent and friendly when he's just wrecked someone, which is a useful quality for a DM.

Horses for courses IMO. There are plenty of games where I just don't think we need Nakamba, and having Luiz's better passing is more important. There are other games where Nakamba can really help. In an ideal world we'd find a player with both their skillsets, but I don't think many (any?) of these exist in world football.

For me it's not a question who is the better player and I doubt it is in Smith's mind either, given Douglas starts 90% of games and Marv comes in usually during a busy schedule.

Marvelous is probably at his best in a double-pivot which helps to alleviate the pressure but press him and he panics. Press Douglas and he doesn't bat an eyelid. Talk about breaking up the play but being press-proof in the modern game is more important as a DM than being able to run around imo. Douglas' positioning is fine, he just doesn't go chasing as much as Marv which has its merits.

Personally would replace Marv in summer.

I totally agree.

The likes of Marvellous and Kortney are not necessarily first team players, but important squad players for me.....I thought Kortney was instrumental in Tyrone having possibly his best game of the season.....Konsa -Hause- Mings impresses me in a back 3.

Marvellous too has specialist attributes, not a great player, but an effective one at what he is best at.

We need to be appreciative of the essence of a deeper squad if we have ambitions.....I would not look to selling him, or Kortney.

A glimpse of what a very good DM can bring to Aston Villa.

This is so true. Sort out centre mid and wide forwards and we are top 8 easily. Bert did quite well today but AEG was a total passenger.
