Christian Purslow

I think he did a great job overall, but this is probably the right decision. Made some mistakes (Gerrard the biggest one) but also did a lot right, and should leave with his head held high.

Liverpool did pretty well after he left them.

I feel rather uneasy about this move.

And, much as I love Emery, I am very uneasy about the suggested importance he may have. That seems to put too much power in the hands of the manager.

considering one of the common criticisms of purslow was "he gave gerrard too much power in the transfer market" it's surprising that so many on twitter are rejoicing in this news

i'm hoping that it's not "emery is doing everything" and more a case of "the team of recruitment analysts, sporting director, coaches and personal assistants that were selected by emery are doing everything"

It should be added that other clubs he's worked for also seem to have felt he had a ceiling - Liverpool for instance seem to not have been too fond of him and viewed him as holding them back, so it may well be hes a safe pair of hands that knows what he's doing, but has a limit in what he can do, and we may feel we've exhausted what he can do for us.

I have a bad feeling about this and I'm not quite sure why. I'm hoping I'm being silly.

I see it more as strategic split to specialise and focus on the footballing side and business side separately.

I always enjoyed hearing Purslow speak and I think he’s done a great job. Although I could never ignore he was a bit slimey and no doubt cut throat/false as you have to be in those positions.

I see it as a bold step taken by our highly successful experienced business operators of chairmen.

Thanks Christian, good luck in the next role.

When you think about it, having one guy overseeing the business AND football aspects of the club seems strange and probably rather outdated. The landscape is much more complex than 25 years ago.

So the verdict is he was essentially sacked?

Sounds more like his role was diluted and he was offered something else which he rejected and left

Will be interesting to see if we replace him directly or we being in buck to do a bit of his job, monchi to do a bit more, give some to lange, give some to Emery, no doubt give some other bits to other directors and managers whos names don't pop up that often (we never talk about our CFO on here but we have one)

If that's the case my main interest is who represents us in the PL meetings

I'm guessing, maybe he saw out a contract, an being how well we have done under Emery, (not a Purslow signing) it shows him bringng his pal Gérard in a complete disaster, which when you are at the top of your game, would not have gone down well with the owners. I think they want a change, but it's maybe been made amicable.

You are not the only one.

He understood the values, classiness, heritage of THIS football club. I am unsure whether Heck and the new DOF will grasp what this club really means to English football and most importanty the fans.

CP was a throwback.. He knows about the 82 European Cup, he knows about Deadly Doug he knows the club inside out..

The Gerrard thing did for him. He was too involved with the footballing side of things and between them both, they completely f*cked it.

Emery came in and has succeeded because he actually knows what he's doing. There is no way that this won't have worked against Purslow. The owners have given Emery the keys to the club I think and are pretty much allowing him to choose his own sporting director. How this turns out, only time will tell.

On the overall job done by Purslow. Meh. He's done some good things I'm sure, and I think he is a very good figurehead for the club in the PL meetings, but given the resources he's had available to him, he's done pretty much as expected. Like I say, Emery's brilliance is the reason we are where we are, not Purslow.

Maybe freshening things up will help in the long term. Maybe we're being more cut throat now in our efforts to achieve glory!

This is a little bit of what I’m worried about

Yes, that's my biggest worry as well. Who will fight for Villa and the other 13 when the Sky 6 try to push through their own agenda?

Maybe Naseef will get more involved in the PL meetings arena - he is based in London isn't he? I could imagine he comes across pretty well and not to be messed with??
