Wow i dont understand all the hate. Conor always gives his best. Unfortunately he just isn’t good enough. Last year Whelan was chosen before him for the first playoff semi. Says everything.

But Conor always does his best.

He does his best to hide.

He may have limited ability but he could at least put a shift in. He should be embarrassed by his performance today.

I’d move him on this window.

His value was the highest it'll ever be last summer. Thought at the time we should have tried to get him off to Leeds as a sweetner in the Phillips offer.

Really silly by Smith to start him. Really silly. Did he think he'd suddenly be able to play against good players?

My mate came along with me today, not a Villa fan, but knows his football, and asked after the game what the **** our number 14 actually does.

I explained he's a specialist like on an NFL Special Team, except because we don't have rolling subs in football, he has to play the whole time, so he stands there waiting patiently for his specialism to be required, and today it wasn't required. Not sure he understood what I meant.

One of my favourite players but just not good enough. He hides massively in games and is not strong or quick enough for the PL. Great for set pieces but this isn't rugby. He can play against the likes of Norwich and Newcastle but not good enough against most other teams.

He is just a limited player. Good finisher, good long shooting, set piece Specialist. The rest of his game is average at best. Lacks creativity, strength, speed, aggression, average first touch.

If we can control possession against inferior teams he will kill them. In a close game his long shooting and set pieces can be a game changer but conversely we are easier to play through. Against a superior team he is dead weight and should never start.

He really doesn't. 14th for attempted tackles. 16th for successful tackles. 15th for interceptions. ( average per game, minimum 5 appearances) is disgusting for a central midfielder and really shows up that he hides from responsibility

Only if we can get better than him, it sounds easy, but we haven't been very good at it.

Got home about 9.30 but couldn’t look at anything to do with AVFC till now. I was concerned when I saw CH in the starting line up and staggered it took so long to take him off. To say he was pathetic today is an understatement.

Seeing him at VP is a bit of an eye opener for anyone I think. He’s just a total pedestrian and he cannot pass. Not great for a midfielder. Our midfield is generally woeful but he’s a big reason for that.

Seen a stat to say that our starting midfield made 4 tackles in today’s game, doesn’t surprise me when he’s playing he’s always hiding away from the opposition

That's a junk stat that I addressed in another thread. Man U 2-3 mid formation made 7 against City mid week and the mid 3 of Everton made 3 game recently

Yep. First game I'd been to since back in PL yesterday. Was thinking for most of the game where the hell is he?

There was one bit second half, jack ran across the pitch with the ball taking 3 defenders with himself he passed to Conor in space, hoping he’d knock the ball inside to someone in space. Conor decided to literally pass the 1 yards back to Jack still surrounded by 3 defenders. Summed him up, not willing to try anything.

If I recall the same incident it was the one down the touchline on the DE side, a pass where Jack was back to goal and only ever going to get nailed. Utterly pathetic

Again, if I believe it was the same passage of play, Taylor came over to take the throw in and got pied off by both Jack and Conor and basically stood off the pitch as Conor and Jack both got on with the throw and passed it amongst themselves. Taylor just stood off the pitch in confusion for a good 10 seconds as play went on.

We have some serious **** issues

Demonstrably false.

How can you put in so many performances where you barely get involved, barely put yourself about. Where was he attempting to even get on the ball? Close the opposition down, making tackles or even attempting them?

He goes hiding when it gets tough.

I like Conor, but yesterday he was pants.  I think a bit of it was having 3 in midfield against 4/5 man city midfielders, who are the best midfield in Europe and then he made a couple of bad passes early on and he gets pissed at himself and is reluctant to show for it again.  He's quite demanding on himself and when it's not going well for him, rather than keep going, it affects him mentally.

He was in no way effective yesterday, but only El Ghazi really deserved any credit from yesterday (he kept chasing and trying).

The system was wrong, we sat too deep, worried about Mahrez getting in behind (he didn't need to in the end).  We should have matched their numbers in midfield which would have let us support el Ghazi better, but Taylor and Elmo were ineffective because they were so deep, they had no wingers to pass to down the line.  The midfield 3 just got over run constantly and Man City had their wing backs in acres of space as an easy out ball all game.

Nothing worked yesterday.

So true, he never closes the ball down it’s so frustrating, a player 8 yards away gets the ball he just stands there keeping his eye on a player 8 yards behind him, he’s the worst of a bad bunch I’m afraid, yes he is good at set pieces but that is all, if he didn’t score a goal every now and again from a free kick or outside the box he’d get more flack, we can’t carry players like him anymore!

Don’t want to see him in a villa shirt again.

I knew starting Connor was a mistake (again) but didn't think he could be that poor. Drinkwater still managed to be better than him despite making errors through lack of match fitness. At least he was trying!

He really is the epitiome of a one trick pony!
