Will be back with us in pre-season trying to earn himself a deal after failing medicals all over the shop and not getting the offers he would like.

I guarantee it.

No chance/

I hope you are right Richard, to me the signing of Richards tells us all we need to know. He will be gone along with Senderos too I would imagine leaving us still with four centre backs.

What makes you think Senderos will leave? His contract isn't up until next summer, nobody is going to want to actually purchase him, and if we were going to agree a mutual termination I would have thought it would have already happened. I can't really see him leaving except maybe on a season-long loan deal at the very end of the window.

I did not know when his contract ended but I can't see him starting under TS so it depends on how much he wants to play. Depending on what we pay him I would probably keep him but my comment was based on the view that I doubt TS wants him.

Sunderland AFC keeping tabs on Aston Villa's Dutch defender Ron Vlaar

Sunderland are keeping tabs on Ron Vlaar’s situation at Aston Villa.

The Dutch defender is out of contract at Villa Park this summer and has yet to commit his future to the Midlands outfit.

That has alerted a number of clubs, both in this country and in Europe, with Sunderland understood to be one of those monitoring Vlaar’s position.

The Black Cats are looking to sign two central defenders, Liverpool’s Sebastian Coates set to become one of those new faces.

Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk is also on their shopping list but the Scottish champions are in no hurry to sell and there are signs other suitors are entering the race, with newly-promoted Norwich City already expressing an interest.

Sunderland will continue to pursue van Dijk but it is no surprise they are also looking at alternatives in case they are unable to land the 23-year-old.

Thirty-year-old Holland international Vlaar falls into that category.

Villa boss Tim Sherwood said last month Vlaar wanted to stay, adding: “I have sat down with Ron and told him I want him to stay, and he says he wants to stay. He has indicated to me he is happy here and he would like the club to talk to his representatives about him staying.

“I am thinking the same way so I am sure something will be done.

“Both parties are willing so I can see him being here next season.

“Ron is going to have a lot of options; he is a free transfer, he is still a full international, he came back from the World Cup last year and he will go to the European Championship next summer.

“He has just been called up for the national team again, so he is a man who is in demand.”

Vlaar, himself, said this month: “I have in consideration (a new deal).

“I think about it. I want to maximize my career and think I can go a step higher.

“I will look at it before deciding.”

So far, Vlaar has not signed a new deal and unless he does he will become a free agent on July 1.

Other potential destinations for Vlaar include Italy’s Serie A or Turkish side Besiktas.

Sunderland boss Dick Advocaat is looking to overhaul the Black Cats’ defence this summer and has already begun that process.

Veteran centre-back Wes Brown has signed a new one-year deal.

The club are also set to sign Uruguay international Coates – who spent last season on loan with the Wearsiders – for £4m.

Liverpool completed the £3.5m signing of Charlton Athletic defender Joe Gomez over the weekend, which edges Coates closer to the Anfield exit.

Sunderland are also aiming to sign another full-back and are believed to have agreed a £1.5m loan fee with Arsenal for England Under 21 international Carl Jenkinson.

However, Jenkinson is also wanted by West Ham, where he spent last season on loan.

Sunderland have at least one other iron in the fire, Leeds United right-back Sam Byram also strongly linked with a move to Wearside.

It would be hilarious if "A Step Higher" Ron ended up signing for Sunderland.

Seeing as Sunderland finished 1 place in front of us....

... he'd just be taking the "A Step Higher" literally. ;)

Sadly the only teams in the league this coming season not a step higher than us based on last year are the 3 promoted clubs
