Ron Vlaar

Would it have been so difficult to say "I need a new challenge" instead of "I'm capable of stepping up"?  Or even better, just leave your agent to it and leave quietly?

No, so sling your hook Ron. And if you ever try and fake allegiance to the Villa when you're washed up and on Sky as a pundit, forget it!  It still doesn't wash with Dwight Yorke and it sure as hell won't with you.

I'm fed up of his mediocre performances, inflated reputation and ridiculous injury record. Deep down, I know him leaving is bad far the team but I'm fed up of him. He's never fit, and clearly looking to step up,whatever that means. It's footballer code for get paid more, I wish they were honest.

He's automatic first choice, but is always out injured and when he comes back into the team he plays one good game in three and then gets injured again. It shatters any sense of continuity or consistency in the team, and I think it's bad for the morale of squad players.

Whoever takes him on will regret it unless he miraculously becomes invulnerable.

Never faulted his application but surprised by his comments as I thought he had more class.

Add his name to the seemingly endless list of mediocre players in recent times.

In terms of ability he's still probably the best CB we've had in the past 6 years. Unfortunately, his injury record has been pretty poor.

6 years hmmmm trying to remember who else we've had in that time, wasn't Laursen still playing then?

I put Vlaar on the same level as Cuellar, Dunne and Collins, some exceptional games, but either badly injured or badly out of favour.

our defenders over the years have been terrible since the Southgate era, only Mellberg (who was awful without the beard) and Laursen have really measured up to any kind of consistency and Laursen was injured for half his Villa career. Look at the fates of Luke Young, decent then frozen out, Shorey played a few times then frozen out. Curtis Davies crap, came good a bit then injured and never seen again. Ridgewell, better for us playing for other teams. Cahill criminally sold. Dunne and Collins, individually could defend but as a partnership they were like the keystone cops. Dunne injured/forced out, Collins flogged back to Wham. Lichaj, ok defensively but too slow to be a wing back. Cuellar frozen out and flogged.

Lowton, good, great, average, frozen out. Bennett mostly awful, Luna sublime or awful. Herd, just awful, one good game at right back and somehow after playing about 6 games in total is still here!!!

Baker, never showed much promise early on, but has a heart like a lion and loves a full blooded head injury. Clark - terrible in all defensive positions for years cept maybe holding midfield then this season comes good. Hutton, angry headless chicken to bomb squad to Villa hero back to being slightly average.

Okore and Bacuna with some credit and potential to their names even if the latter is clearly not a right back. Cissokho - good start, some average games but never really terrible, now unlikely to play for us again.

sure i've missed some.

Bouma was great then had a bad injury that he didn't recover from, fairly sure Delaney was the same.

Zat Knight had a few good games but had a bad reputation that didn't get much better for us.

Wing/full backs that played at a decent level were Barry, Staunton and Alan Wright and none of them were natural defenders but at the time they probably didn't need to be.

Ehiogu and Okore are ridiculously similar, just hope Okore doesn't announce he wants to play at a higher level then go to Middlesborough like Ugo and Gareth did!

ALL of our CBs are injury prone... that's the real issue we have at the back.

Clark certainly isn't and Okore isn't really either - he's just had that one really bad injury.

Dunne was 10 times better than Vlaar even Collins was better value for us

In terms of ability? That's so hilariously wrong and you know it. Even in terms of overall value (so taking injuries into account) I think it's debatable as to whether Dunne or Collins were better value. Don't forget that in their one really good season Dunne and Collins had Milner and Petrov in front of them.

Richard Dunne 2009/10 PFA Team of the Year

Ron Vlaar wouldnt get into a Aston Villa 2014/15 Team of the Year

no question who was the better player

Is that the entire basis of your argument? If so it's a pretty poor one. There are so many variables in there.

The fact that Dunne's Irish hasn't got anything to do with it has it? ;)

Yep Richard Dunne was a better player because he was Irish, on that basis Stephen Ireland was better than Milner and Enda Stevens was better than Bouma

fact is Dunne was a better player, after Melberg and Laursen he was the best centre half we had in last 15 years
