He had a shot blocked which fell to the "savior" Gestede who should have scored, and he made a great run which ended with a tame shot. But of course... since he is Gabby, it is easy to just say no goals you suck. I wonder what games people see. What the hell has Delph done in comparison to Gabby? Actually, what has anybody in this Villa team done for Villa in comparison to Gabby? This Really? A striker at the top level has an above average game if he makes one decent pass, shot well once which was blocked anyway and passed back to their keeper after a great run? No wonder Heskey stayed around so long, he must have been a marvel in so many eyes. He would do what Gabby did in 10 minutes, especially the lack of shooting. The guy isn't even as good a dribbler as Hutton. Last season Hutton was far superior than him coming forward (exampled by his high chance creation) as well as better at passing the ball. Hutton is a defender, Gabby is a forward (striker isn't fair), how is he so useless in the final third? You compared his contribution to Delph, well Delph drove us forward, made tackles that retained the ball and was part of quick passing movements which moved around a team and not a single player as Gabby does. Compare that with Gabby and we have a dwelling, poor passer who has even lost the ability to cross. 3 good games all year doesn't make up for season after season of poor attitude to development. I will say though when he runs, which he literally never consistently does, he pulls defences apart and creates havoc....he just can't concentrate for 90mins to do so. I'm settled with the fact he's not a goal scorer, but he's barely a footballer, he has to offer something more than one poorly executed trick. (pace) Going down the list of squad players Gabby is near the bottom, less effective than even Weimann was. He's contributed more than Bennet I'll give him that but his attitude is appalling, headless chicken isn't going to help us push up the league. He needs to listen to coaches, keep telling himself to concentrate in game and do the simple things well, then there's a point to having him near the team. It'll be interesting to see what people think of him when competing against the new wide men/forwards, I think people will realise how different it is with attacking players who can actually read a game, or are willing to at least try. Wow, I guess football really is a game of opinions then. I've defended Gabby and what he brings to the team, but if that is what you see then i don't blame you not wanting him here. I see him very differently, and as such do want him in and/or around our 11. TRO Posted August 14, 2015 Share Posted August 14, 2015 (edited) I have never been a Gabby Fan mainly because Pace in isolation has never really floated my boat....I like technical ability.....I was never a big fan of Tony Daley for similar reasons or Darius Vassell itdoesntmatterwhatthissay makes points that I can relate too. However, I think he will start tonight and I also think he now has competition to contend with. We will see how that pans out. I would say to all the Gabby Fans though.....not rating him is quite different from hating him or slagging him off, which is what some pro Gabby fans describe us as. .....But I hope he proves me wrong. He is one of the main reasons we've been so poor over the past few seasons. He's made 64 League appearances in the past 2 seasons and has only scored 10 goals and recorded 6 assists during that time. That's a goal or an assist every 4 appearances, which is awful for a forward or a winger. His first touch and dribbling ability is so poor, that I think the average central defender in the league is pretty much on par with Gabby's ability. He doesn't have any tools or tricks to call upon in his locker other than his speed and above average strength. His finishing ability is poor to average at best, and he makes the wrong decision, more often than not. His workrate is hilariously bad. He'll make a brief effort to chase down loose balls and hassle defenders at the start of a match, but after he gets called for a few fouls, he stops working all together. The worst part is that he's now our highest paid player now that we've lost Bent, Benteke, Given, and Delph, and his wages in now way reflect his contribution to the team. There is no way we'll be able to offload him to another club. Even Sunderland, and their squad of overrated English one trick ponies, wouldn't touch him with a 10 ft pole. The Championship is his level, but no team at that level can afford to match his 65k a week salary. Here is a chart of how I see his performances. 1 in 10 games - Stormer: He's unplayable. Everything falls into place for him and he can run by defenders with the ball and put the ball in the net with ease. Multiple goals/assists. 1 in 10 games - Good: He pushes our attack forward and draws defenders out into making mistakes. Either logs an assist or a goal. 2 in 10 games - Average: He chases down balls, sometimes gets into good positions, and occasionally, he'll get a goal or an assist by a complete fluke or a defensive error. 4 in 10 games - Poor: Disappears for long stretches in the match. When he does get the ball, he runs into multiple defenders and loses possession. Gets frustrated, and doesn't work to get the ball back or to make forward runs. He might make one good pass or makes it through on goal a game, but will bottle it more often than not. 2 in 10 games - Abysmal: Completely anonymous on the pitch. Touches the ball maybe 1-2s a match and does nothing to help the team. Basically playing down a man. In 8/10 games, you're more likely to get a poor showing from "Mr. Aston Villa" than you are to get an average performance, and his average isn't good enough for us. He's the first person on the teamsheet I'd drop, if I was Tim Sherwood. At his very best, Gabby should be nothing more than an impact sub, to only be used when we need someone to run at tired defenses in the last 15 minutes of a match. I used to be a huge fan of his in the MON era. His hat trick against Man City is still one of my favorite Villa memories of all time, and I thought he was going to be a top top player for both the Villa and England after that game. Unfortunately, he's no longer that young, hungry, unknown player who just wants to play for his club anymore. He's been slacking and just going through the motions to collect a paycheck for over 5 years now. If he wasn't a Villa supporter, we would have been calling for his head a long time ago.
